Anthony Richard "Tony" Pulis (born January 16, 1958 in Newport ) is a former Welsh football player and was most recently the coach of Middlesbrough FC .

Player career

His career began in 1975 with the Bristol Rovers , for which he played for a total of eight years with a short break. Pulis ended his playing career in 1992 in the third division at AFC Bournemouth , where he then took over his first coaching post. In total, Tony Pulis completed 324 league games and scored nine goals during that time.

Coaching career

In 1992 Tony Pulis started his coaching work at the English third division AFC Bournemouth, where he succeeded Harry Redknapp . After two seasons in the lower third of the Second Division, his tenure in Bournemouth ended .

In 1995 he took over the coaching position at the fourth division Gillingham FC and achieved relegation with his team. The team experienced a significant increase in performance in the 1995/96 season with second place in the table behind Preston North End , which led to direct promotion to the third division. Even in the higher division, the club was able to assert itself well under Tony Pulis and confidently secured the league membership with eleventh place. In the 1997/98 season Gillingham reached eighth place and missed the play-offs with a tie with sixth-placed Fulham FC . The club achieved this in the following season with a fourth place in the table. After a success over the fifth Preston North End, the team failed only in the final at Wembley on penalties at Manchester City . After this defeat, the club surprisingly split from Pulis.

At the beginning of the 1999/2000 season, he began his tenure at Bristol City , which was less fortunate and ended prematurely after six months.

In January 2000 he took over the coaching post at the second division club Portsmouth and secured the club with eighteenth place relegation. When his new team found themselves in the relegation battle in the 2000/01 season, the club separated from its coach in October 2000.

Stoke City

After a long time without coaching, he took over at Stoke City in November 2002 and achieved the hard-earned relegation in the second division. The seasons 2003/04 and 04/05 the club spent in the secured midfield of the table. After disagreements about the transfer budget, the separation followed at the end of June 2005.

His new club Plymouth Argyle was also active in the second division and finished fourteenth in the Football League Championship 2005/06 at the end of the season . After this season the new owner of Stoke City Pulis convinced to return to Stoke-on-Trent .

The 2006/07 season ended with eighth place and a narrowly missed play-off participation. Already in the Football League Championship 2007/08 , the team around Ricardo Fuller , Rory Delap and Salif Diao reached the hoped-for promotion to the Premier League as runner-up behind West Bromwich Albion after 23 years of absence . After a temporary relegation risk Tony Pulis and his team managed to stay in the Premier League 2008/09 . After eleventh place in the 2009/10 season , Stoke City is also having a successful season in the current 2010/11 Premier League and has the opportunity to reach a single-digit table position. The good season in the league was accompanied by successes in the FA Cup , in which Stoke reached the semifinals after victories over Cardiff City , Wolverhampton Wanderers , Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United . There the team around Robert Huth , Ryan Shawcross and Jermaine Pennant defeated the Bolton Wanderers 5-0 at Wembley and moved into the cup final against Manchester City , which took place on May 11, 2011. Despite a good performance, the "Potters" lost the final of the prestigious FA Cup against the big favorites from Manchester with 0: 1. Winning this title was the first major success of the Citizens in the Sheikh era and formed the basis for the further titles of the club from the industrial city of Manchester.

In view of his considerable successes with Stoke City (promotion to the Premier League, reaching the FA Cup final, entry into the Europa League), Tony Pullis enjoyed long credit from the fans and club bosses even in difficult times. Pullis himself wanted to have more and more influence on club politics and called for greater investments in new players and assistant coaches. After he could not find a common denominator with the executive suite of the club, Pullis was dismissed by the club's board on May 21, 2013. Tony Pullis could at least keep his considerable clean slate when it comes to descents. Although the Welshman mostly coached teams at risk of relegation, Tony Pullis has never been relegated as a coach.

Further stations

In November of the same year he succeeded Ian Holloway at Crystal Palace . After a successful season in which Pulis was able to save Palace from relegation, Pulis resigned shortly before the start of the 2014/15 season. The reason for the resignation were differences with a club owner.
