Robert Huth (born August 18, 1984 in East Berlin ) is a former German soccer player .

Club career

Youth and England change

Robert Huth was born in 1984 in the Biesdorf district in East Berlin in the GDR . He began his career as a football player with the local club VfB Fortuna Biesdorf. In 1998 he joined 1. FC Union Berlin and after two years switched to the English first division club Chelsea as a youth player . His debut in the Premier League made Huth on the last day of the 2001/02 season against Aston Villa . In 2005 and 2006 he was English champion with Chelsea . A move to Middlesbrough FC for the 2006/07 season initially failed due to the health check. On August 30, 2006, shortly before the end of the transfer, the transfer took place. On December 5, 2006, he scored his first goal for Middlesbrough FC and thus his first goal in the English Premier League. Despite the goal, the game against Tottenham Hotspur was lost 2-1.

Stoke City

In the summer of 2009, Huth moved to Stoke City . The transfer fee was five million pounds. After Dave Kitson and together with Tuncay Şanlı, Huth was one of the most expensive commitments in the club's history. At the turn of the year 2010/11, Liverpool FC made an offer of six million euros for Huth, as they wanted to sign him as a replacement for the injured Jamie Carragher . However, Stoke City had no intention of selling Huth and turned down the offer. With Stoke City Huth moved into the FA Cup final in 2011 , but lost 1-0 to Manchester City . He was also named Stoke City's Player of the Year after this successful season. Above all, his scoring danger as a defender (nine goals in 44 competitive games) made him indispensable for the team. In June 2012, Huth extended Stoke City for three more years to 2016.

On November 24, 2013, Huth injured his knee and was then out for the rest of the season. As a result of this injury, he lost his regular place at Stoke City. In late October 2014, the defender tore the meniscus and was out for a month and a half. On December 6, 2014, he made his comeback in the Premier League.

Leicester City

In order to allow Huth more match practice, he was given on February 2, 2015 via a loan deal until the end of the season to league rivals Leicester City , who tied him permanently in June 2015 and with whom he surprisingly won the English championship in May 2016. His contract, which expired in summer 2018, was not renewed. He ended his football career in January 2019. In total, he played 322 games in the Premier League.

National team

Robert Huth in the national dress

Huth was nominated for the first time in 2004 for Germany's U-21 , in which he was used until September 2005. His first two games for the U-21s were group matches at the European Championship in Germany , in which the DFB-Elf were eliminated in the preliminary round.

On August 16, 2004, he was invited to Germany's senior national team for the first time with a subsequent nomination by the then national coach Jürgen Klinsmann . He played his first international match on August 18, 2004, his 20th birthday, in the Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna against Austria ; he came on in the 86th minute for Andreas Hinkel . His first major tournament was the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup in Germany, where he was used as a regular player in his position as central defender . After criticizing his performance in the opening game, the then 20-year-old Huth stepped up and scored his first international goal in the game for third place against Mexico in the Leipzig Central Stadium on June 29, 2005 in the eleventh international match . At the 2006 World Cup , he was used in the preliminary round match against Ecuador. On March 20, 2008 he was nominated for the national team by Joachim Löw for the first time after the World Cup , but had to cancel due to an injury. Another year later, on May 19, 2009, Huth was called up for the DFB's Asia trip from the end of May to the beginning of June. However, the reason for this was also the absence of the regular central defenders.

Despite strong performances in the 2010/11 season and much recognition in England, Huth was no longer nominated for the national team. Although there was still speculation about a possible return to the national team for the 2016 European Championship , the nomination by national coach Joachim Löw did not materialize.

Others

Robert Huth is the son of a driver and an educator. Up to the age of 16 he attended the Flatow High School in the Berlin district of Köpenick , for whose school he played with the former football professionals Björn Andersohn and Patrick Jahn , among others .

It was called The Berlin Wall by English fans .
