Tuncay Şanlı [ tunˈdʒaj ˈʃanlɯ ] (born January 16, 1982 in Adapazarı , Sakarya ), called Tuncay , is a former Turkish football player and current coach.

Player career

Tuncay signed his first professional contract with the second division club Sakaryaspor and scored 16 goals in 31 league games in the 2000/01 season. The following season he increased his goal count to 18 goals. Before the 2002/03 season he received a two-year contract with Fenerbahçe Istanbul and scored ten times for the team from the Şükrü Saraçoğlu Stadium . In the 2003/04 season he contributed 19 goals in 31 games to win the championship. At the end of the season he extended his contract until 2007. In his first Champions League season ( 2004/05 ) he scored five goals. He scored a hat trick in the game against Manchester United .

In the summer of 2007 he moved to the English first division club Middlesbrough for four years . On December 1, 2007 he scored his first Premier League goal against Reading FC . During the season he scored eight goals in the Premier League. He was voted Middlesbroughs Best Player in 2008-09. After the team's relegation, Tuncay joined Stoke City . He made his debut in the game against Sunderland (1-0), in which he came on in the 84th minute.

From January 2011 he played at VfL Wolfsburg . However, he was only used three times in the rest of the season and was substituted on again in the season finale.

During the summer break of 2011, Tuncay was loaned to Bolton Wanderers for a year , who also had a purchase option. After he returned to Wolfsburg, his contract was terminated on July 25, 2012.

At the beginning of September 2012 Tuncay moved to the Turkish club Bursaspor . He signed a three-year contract here. His contract was terminated at the beginning of February 2014.

After leaving Bursaspor, he played for Umm-Salal SC and FC Pune City in succession and ended his active career in the summer of 2016.

National team

After a few U-21 international appearances , Tuncay made his senior national team debut in November 2002 at the age of 20 in a friendly against Italy. He scored three times in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup when Turkey finished third. He was awarded the Silver Ball as the second best player in the tournament and the Silver Shoe as the second best scorer in the tournament. However , his country failed to qualify for UEFA EURO 2004 ; Tuncay only played eleven minutes in the play-off loss against Latvia . Tuncay played for the Turkish U-21 national team the day before his international debut and scored twice.

In the third preliminary round match against the Czech Republic in Euro 2008 , the Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel received the red card in the last minutes after assaulting Jan Koller . The coach Fatih Terim was forced to put Tuncay in goal, as he had already made all substitutions. The game could Turkey with 3: 2 win. On September 5, 2009 he scored his 21st and 22nd goals for the Turkish national team in the World Cup qualifier against Estonia. He replaced Lefter Küçükandonyadis as the second best Turkish goal scorer. Only Hakan Şükür is ahead of him with 51 goals.

Coaching career

Şanlı, who ended his active career in the summer of 2016, was taken along to the 2016 European Championship by head coach Fatih Terim as part of the coaching staff and assisted the Turkish national coach during this tournament.

In October 2016 he took over his first club, Sakaryaspor, as head coach and officially started his coaching career.
