Raşit Çetiner (born September 10, 1956 in Istanbul ) is a former Turkish football player and coach . Although he had previously played for arch-rivals Fenerbahçe Istanbul , he is strongly associated with the club through his work for Galatasaray Istanbul . He is seen by fans and clubs as one of the most important players in club history. He was part of the team that was able to win the Turkish championship again after fourteen years of waiting in the 1986/87 season . The fans of Galatasaray called him at player times because of his self-sacrificing style of play Aslan Yürekli (German: The one with the lion heart ) or lovingly Baba Raşit (German: Father Raşit ). After his active playing career, he worked as head coach and, among other things, looked after the Turkish U-21 national team for many years .

society

Çetiner was born in Istanbul in 1956. At the traditional club İstanbulspor he began with club football. Here he was noticed by the Turkish national coaches and was nominated for the Turkish U-18 national team in 1974. In the same year, at the age of eighteen, he was accepted into the professional squad and immediately made it to the top team of the then second division team. At the end of the season, several first division clubs became aware of the second division's shooting star. Benefiting from the relegation of İstanbulspors to the third-highest division at the time, the club was interested in selling Çetiner at a profit.

The then first division team Göztepe Izmir reacted the fastest and signed the youngster. At Göztepe he did not make it into the starting eleven, he was only substituted on sporadically. After just one season, he left Göztepe and moved to the then second division Kocaelispor . At this club, Çetiner immediately prevailed and became a top performer. Although he was a defensive player and was usually used either in defense or in defensive midfield, he stood out for his scoring qualities. Unusual in Turkish football at that time, he often took part in his team's offensive game and was always in the opposing penalty area in set pieces. So he scored 17 league goals in the 1977/78 season and was together with Ali Çağlar von Göztepe top scorer in the 2nd league .

This performance at Kocaelispor made him one of the shooting stars of the season. Fenerbahçe Istanbul signed Çetiner for the summer of 1978. In his first season at Fenerbahçe, he immediately found a place in the team under coach Necdet Niş and was one of the top performers of his team with his five goals in 30 league games. The club finished the season in third place in the table and won the Turkish Football Cup . Thus Çetiner also achieved his first title win. The next season he improved his performance under the new coach Ziya Şengül and was the most accurate player of his team with 13 goals as a defender. For the 1980/81 season , the German coach Friedel Rausch took over the position of coach at Fenerbahçe. After a very disappointing season, the club's management decided to revise the team and sorted out several players in the summer of 1981 according to Rausch's directives. A similar revision was also carried out at league rivals Galatasaray Istanbul . Çetiner, who was one of the eliminated players, switched to the red-yellow in exchange for Erdoğan Arıca and Güngör Tekin .

At Galatasaray, Çetiner immediately enjoyed the trust of English coach Brian Birch . In his first season for his new club, he won the Turkish Football Cup and the Turkish Supercup with the team . Çetiner played two seasons under Birch and then under Özkan Sümer and Tomislav Ivić . With all three coaches the Turkish championship , which had been hoped for ten years, did not succeed . During this time, Çetiner worked his way up to become a top performer.

For the 1984/85 season, the former national coach Jupp Derwall took over as coach at Galatasaray. With this coach, the club's management aimed at a radical change in the team and wanted to form a team over a longer period of time that could win the hoped-for championship. Since Çetiner was considered a model professional, he was kept by Derwall in the team to form a new team with him and other experienced players. In the first season under Derwall, the team finished a disappointing fifth place in the table, but won the Turkish Football Cup . In the second season under Derwall, the careful team building showed an effect. So the team played for a long time for the Turkish championship and only missed it on the last match day, tied on points, but due to the worse goal difference, to city rivals Beşiktaş Istanbul . Çetiner played all 34 league games this season and contributed nine goals. In the 1986/87 season the team won the long-awaited Turkish championship after fourteen years of waiting . Çetiner played the first 21 league games this season. In the game of 21st matchday against Samsunspor on March 28, 1987 Çetiner's career took a dramatic turn. He broke his leg in a duel against Muzaffer Badalıoğlu , notorious for his very physical style of play , who had already been blamed for the retirement of some players. So he was out until the end of the season, but supported his team with crutches from the bench in the remaining games. Galatasaray only secured the Turkish championship on the last day of the home game against the then feared opponent Eskişehirspor . The pictures that went through the press after the game had ended are legendary. They show how Çetiner storms onto the field on crutches to celebrate the championship they have won.

In the 1987/88 season , Çetiner did not recover from his injury. Although he was not ready for action, he was always on the bench as team captain. The coaching office was taken over by a former teammate and Derwall's assistant coach Mustafa Denizli . This coach managed to defend his title with Galatasaray. When Çetiner announced his end of career at the end of the season, he was taken into the starting line-up by Denizli in the game against Boluspor on the last matchday . Çetiner played the first 17th minutes and then said goodbye to the football stage.

National team

Çetiner played for the Turkish national team for the first time during his time at İstanbulspor for the Turkish U-18 national team on October 19, 1974 in a friendly match against the Bulgarian U-18 national team. From then on he was one of the often nominated players of the U-18s. With the Turkish U-18s, he took part in the 1975 UEFA youth tournament , the forerunner of the U-18 European football championship , and finished fourth in this tournament. This performance achieved the best result of a Turkish national team in a major tournament to date.

Between his games for the U-18s, he was nominated in April 1975 by the then coach of the Turkish national soccer team , Coşkun Özarı , as part of a test match against the national soccer team of the USSR , but was on the bench for the game.

In late 1976 he played the following time for the Turkish U-21 national team . In between he was nominated in September 1978 by the national coach Metin Türel for the Turkish national soccer team, but was again only on the bench in the friendly against Italy. A month later, he made his international debut during a friendly against the USSR national team. He then played another match for the national team in November 1978 under the new national coach Sabri Kiraz . Otherwise he played for the Turkish U-21s until the summer of 1979 and was not nominated for the next four years.

With his move to Galatasaray Istanbul, he increased his performance in the league and caught the attention of those responsible for the national teams. National coach Coşkun Özarı nominated him in March 1983 for a friendly against the Romanian national team . From then on, he was one of the regularly used players for two and a half years, not considering injury-related failures. He took part with the national team in the qualification of the European Football Championship 1984 , qualification of the Football World Cup 1986 , but could not qualify with his team for any of the tournaments. In some of his last internationals he wore the captain's armband.

He made his last international match on October 16, 1985 during a World Cup qualifier against the English national team . After losing this game 5-0, a radical cut in the national team was decided and from then on young players were preferred.

Coaching career

After the end of his football career, Çetiner decided to pursue a coaching career. His first activity was coaching the then second team Galatasaray Istanbul , the then third division Beylerbeyi SK . For the 1990/91 season he took over the post of assistant coach at Galatasaray and thus assisted his former teammate Mustafa Denizli . In the following two seasons, his team in the national championship twice against Beşiktaş Istanbul was left behind.

For the second half of the 1992/93 season, Çetiner took over the first division club Gaziantepspor and worked for the first time in his career as head coach. At the end of the season he left this club and took over the league rivals Altay Izmir . He looked after this club for the next two and a half seasons.

Nine game days before the end of the 1995/96 season he took over the severely relegation-threatened club Kayserispor and just missed relegation with this at the end of the season. The 1996/97 season he took over Çanakkale Dardanelspor and trained for 16 match days.

At the beginning of the 1997/98 season he was presented as head coach at the second division club Denizlispor . With this team he played for the entire season for promotion. At the end of the season they became third in the table and missed promotion to the top Turkish league.

In 1998 he was proposed by his former teammate Mustafa Denizli, who was now the national coach of Turkey, as national coach of the Turkish U-21 national team and got this position. He led the Turkish U-21s to the U-21 European Football Championship in 2000 and thus achieved the first qualification of a Turkish U-21 at a U-21 European Football Championship . A year later he took part in the Mediterranean Games with the Olympic team of Turkey, which he also coached as U-21 coach, and finished fourth with his team. He looked after the Turkish U-21s until the summer of 2005 and then left this post.

For the 2004/05 season he was the coach of the second division Bursaspor . At the end of the season he celebrated the championship of the TFF 1st Lig with this team and thus the direct promotion to the Süper Lig . After he also looked after the club in the Süper Lig, he left the club after eleven match days. He then trained in succession to Antalyaspor , Konyaspor and Çaykur Rizespor .

In spring 2010 he took over the Turkish U-21 national team again. After the Turkish national football team , the qualification for the 2012 European Football Championship , missed stepped Çetiner how the entire coaching staff of the national teams, from his post.

In March 2013 he took over at the second division side Şanlıurfaspor and replaced the former coach Bahri Kaya . On September 19, 2013, Çetiner resigned as coach of Şanlıurfaspor.
