Muzaffer Badalıoğlu, also referred to by some sources as Muzaffer Badaloğlu (born November 13, 1960 in Zonguldak , † January 20, 1989 in Havza ), was a Turkish football player . He was both for his hometown club Zonguldakspor and for his later club Samsunspor one of the most important players in their most successful times. He died in January 1989 in a serious traffic accident in which the Samsunspor team bus was involved during the outward journey to an away game. Since then, his name has been closely associated with this accident, which also went into Turkish sports annals as the tragedy of January 20th (Turkish 20 Ocak Faciası ) and is considered one of the worst tragedies in Turkish football. Due to his very close man coverage, his tough duels and body-hugging style of play, he received the negatively connoted Kasap Muzaffer (German Muzaffer, the butcher or butcher Muzaffer ) during playing times . After direct duels with him, for example, the Turkish internationals Raşit Çetiner and Erdal Keser injured themselves so badly that they were out for a long time and then either had to end their careers or never found their way back to their old form. He was voted into the best team in the club's history by the Samsunspor supporters .

Badalıoğlu started his club football career in the youth department of his home club Zonguldakspor . This provincial club was initiated by a reform in Turkish football and was only founded in the summer of 1966 and, through the championship in the summer of 1973, achieved the first participation in the Türkiye 1. Futbol Ligi , the top division in Turkish football. Badalıoğlu made it to the professional team in the summer of 1978. He made his professional debut on September 30, 1978 in a league encounter against Altay Izmir . By the end of the season, he also completed 15 more appearances and one cup encounter in the league. In the next season, the 1979/80 season , Badalıoğlu captured a regular place. During this season, his team finished the first division completely surprisingly in third place in the table and thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Badalıoğlu was a defender with 27 league appearances one of the players with the most appearances of his team. He also played a key role in ensuring that his team, with 19 goals conceded, became the team with the fewest goals conceded after champions Trabzonspor . In the next season Badalıoğlu came to 21 league appearances and experienced a small step backwards in his career. His team ended the season in 7th place in the table and thus remained behind the previous year's performance. In the 1981/82 season , the team found its way back to its old strength and finished the league in 4th place in the table. This achieved the second-best first division placement in the club's history. Badalıoğlu was one of the most important players on his team this season. The following years Badalıoğlu's team fell short of expectations and recently even played against relegation. Badalıoğlu himself consolidated his position within the team and rose thereby to the national player.

For the 1985/86 season Badalıoğlu moved to the first division newcomer Samsunspor . The financially strong club management invested in new signings in order to transform the club into a championship contender for the newcomer of the Turkish Black Sea region . In the previous season, two youngsters Fatih Uraz and Levent Eriş , who were courted by many clubs , were committed and at the end of the season they were promoted to the 1st league. After the promotion, the club's management continued to invest in the team and, in addition to Badalıoğlu and his teammate Savaş Demiral, also signed experienced and promising players such as Yaşar Yiğit , Orhan Kapucu and Erol Dinler . Badalıoğlu established himself as a regular player at his club right away. Promoted to the first league, Badalıoğlu's team, as intended by the club's management, became the surprise team of the first division season 1985/86 . The team finished the league in 3rd place in the table and achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Especially compared to the larger clubs, the team shows z. T. clear superiority. The reigning champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul were clearly beaten 4-0 at home and defeated 1-0 away. Badalıoğlu stood out as one of the top performers and defense chief of the team. In the next season, the club played for a long time for the championship, only in the last few weeks missed the connection to the two other championship contenders Galatasaray Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the Turkish Football Cup Badalıoğlu's team reached the final. In the semi-finals, the team prevailed against Fenerbahçe. In the cup final, the team lost to Sakaryaspor and finished the league in 4th place in the table.

The club also started successfully in the 1988/89 season and established itself at the top. Badalıoğlu completed almost all league encounters up to the winter break. On the first match day of the second half of the season, the team had to play away against Malatyaspor . On the outward journey to Malatya , the Samsunspors team bus got into a serious accident, causing several players, coaches and club officials to be fatally injured or seriously injured. Due to this event, the team could not take part in the game in the second half of the season, so the Turkish Football Association decided not to let Samsunspor play for the second half. All games were decided 3-0 for the opponent Samsunspors. Samsunspor was bottom of the table, but was excluded from relegation. Uraz was in the team bus during the accident and survived with several injuries. Badalıoğlu was one of those players who were seriously injured in this serious accident and died a little later as a result of these injuries. Since then, he has been a symbol of this accident, which is considered to be one of the greatest tragedies in the club's history in particular and in Turkish football in general. On every anniversary of this accident, a prayer is held for him and his fellow players who died in this accident.

National team

Badalıoğlu's national team career began in 1978 with a commitment for the Turkish U-18 national team. After he had completed 13 missions for this selection in the years 1978 to 1979, he began from 1979 to play for the Turkish U-21 national team.

In September 1982 Badalıoğlu was nominated for the first time and for the squad of the Turkish national team in a friendly against the Hungarian national team by national coach Coşkun Özarı and completed his first international match in this game.

In 1987 he played twice for the Turkey Olympic team.

In total, he completed a total of 13 U-18, three U-21, two Olympic and four A international games for his country.
