Savaş Demiral (born June 28, 1961 in Zonguldak ) is a former Turkish football player and coach. In his three years at Galatasaray he was involved in some of the most important successes in the club's history and is therefore associated with this club. Since when he switched to Galatasaray with the German-Turkish Savaş Koç there was another Savaş in the team squad and this was younger, Koç was henceforth referred to as the Küçük Savaş (German: the little Savaş ) and Demiral as the Büyük Savaş (German: the big one Savaş ).

Player career

Zonguldakspor

Demiral began club football in the youth division of Zonguldakspor , the first division team in his hometown of Zonguldak. In 1979 he was taken up by the head coach of the professional team, Gündüz Tekin Onay , in the squad of the club's first men's team. He made his professional debut on November 11, 1979 in the first division game against Fenerbahçe Istanbul . By the end of the season, he completed nine more league games. His team ended this season completely surprisingly in 3rd place in the table and thus achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. As a defensive defender, Demiral played a part in the fact that his team, with 19 goals conceded, became the team with the fewest goals conceded after champions Trabzonspor . In the next season Demiral further consolidated his position within the team and rose to the U-21 national player. His team finished the season in 7th place in the table and lagged behind the previous year's performance. In the 1981/82 season , the team found its way back to its old strength and finished the league in 4th place in the table. This achieved the second-best first division placement in the club's history. Demiral was one of the most important players on his team this season. The following years Demirals team fell short of expectations.

Samsunspor

In the summer of 1985 Demiral left together with his teammate Muzaffer Badalıoğlu Zonguldakspor and moved within the 1st Lig to the promoted Samsunspor . Demiral immediately established himself as a regular at his club. Promoted to the first league, Demiral's team became the surprise team of the first division season 1985/86 . The team finished the league in 3rd place in the table and achieved the best first division placement in the club's history. Especially compared to the larger clubs, the team shows z. T. clear superiority. The reigning champions Fenerbahçe Istanbul were clearly beaten 4-0 at home and defeated 1-0 away. Demiral stood out as one of the team's top performers and was promoted to the Turkish national team this season. In the next season, the club played for a long time for the championship, only in the last few weeks missed the connection to the two other championship contenders Galatasaray Istanbul and Beşiktaş Istanbul . In the Turkish Football Cup , Demiral's team reached the final. In the semi-finals, the team prevailed against Fenerbahçe. In the cup final, the team lost to Sakaryaspor and finished the league in 4th place in the table. Demiral, who this season together with some teammates had established himself as the shooting stars of the season, was one of the most sought-after players of the summer transfer period.

Galatasaray Istanbul

On the directive of his head coach Jupp Derwall , Galatasaray tried to commit Demiral and his teammates Tanju Çolak . Although Demiral had several offers, he chose the offer from Galatasaray. So he moved to the Istanbul team with his teammate Tanju Çolak. Galatasaray paid a transfer fee of 100 million Turkish Lira for Demiral to Samsunspor . For the upcoming season Derwall handed over his office to his assistant coach Mustafa Denizli . Under this coach, Demiral immediately conquered a regular place. At the end of the season he and his team were Turkish champions with a record 90 points . To Beşiktaş, second in the table, they achieved a point difference of 12 points.

In the 1988/89 season they missed the championship far behind. This caused a sensation on the international stage. At that time it was the rule for Turkish teams to be eliminated in the first two rounds of European Cup competitions. Galatasaray made it to the semi-finals of the 1988/89 European Cup . In the first round Demirals team met the Austrian champions Rapid Wien . In the first leg Galatasaray lost 2-1. Demiral scored in this game after the 2-0 lead of the Viennese in the 81st minute with a respectable long-range shot, the connection goal of his team and secured his team the important away goal in the knockout system . In the second leg, Demirals team prevailed 2-0 against Rapid and reached the quarter-finals. In the quarter-finals, the team met Swiss champions Neuchâtel Xamax . The return match against Neuchatel in particular is considered legendary by the club. First they lost the first leg 3-0 in the second round. The second leg in Istanbul was sensationally won 5-0 and made it to the quarter-finals of the European Cup . Here you met the reigning French champions AS Monaco . Again, they surprisingly prevailed and were only eliminated in the semi-finals against Steaua Bucharest . Demiral played the full distance in almost all matches. Despite these successes, the club's management decided to replace Denizli with the German coach Sigfried Held . This fell far short of expectations and, with a few exceptions, always let Demiral play. So the club's management reacted again and committed Mustafa Denizli a second time for the 1990/91 season . Demiral started the new season under Denizli as usual at Galatasaray, but was loaned to Konyaspor in October 1990 .

Malatyaspor, Sakaryaspor and Küçükçekmecespor

Also in the 1991/92 season he began the season at Galatasaray, but moved to the second division team Malatyaspor for the first few days . After playing one season for this club, he moved to Sakaryaspor after a week . With this club he was under contract until 1994 and spent the last season as a loan player at Küçükçekmecespor . Then he ended his career.

In 2001 he made a comeback as an amateur player at Küçükçekmecespor. In 2003 he played for a short time at the Istanbul amateur club Kanarya SK and then ended his career for the second time.

National team

Demiral began his international career with a commitment for the Turkish U-21 national team . After two more games for the U-21s, he was nominated by the Turkish coach Coşkun Özarı in the squad of the Turkish national team . In the friendly against Switzerland he made his international debut. By 1990 Demiral completed ten more senior internationals.

In the meantime, Demiral also played for his country's Olympic team and played a total of three games for them.

Coaching career

Demiral took over the fourth division Beylerbeyi SK , the then second team of Galatasaray Istanbul , in the summer of 2005 . Before the start of the second half of the season Demiral left this club again. Later he coached the amateur club Edremit Belediyespor and Karacabeyspor .
