Erkan Zengin (born August 5, 1985 in Kulu ) is a Swedish football player of Turkish descent. The midfielder , who played for the youth teams of both football associations, won the Turkish championship , the national cup and thus the Turkish double with Beşiktaş JK in 2009 .

Career

Breakthrough in Sweden

Zengin started playing football at Norsborgs IF in the early 1990s . As a nine-year-old he moved to the youth department of Hammarby IF , where he played through various youth teams until 2002. In 2002 he joined Hammarby Talang FF , the Hammarby IF farm team. For the team in the fourth division Division 2 , he scored ten goals in his first season. In total, he played two seasons in the team and was simultaneously appointed to the Turkish U-18 team.

In 2004, Zengin returned to Hammarby IF, in the same year for the first time for the club in the Allsvenskan to use. In the following season, the midfield all-rounder was able to establish himself in the squad of the first division team and was regularly used - but mostly as a substitute. After he had decided for the Swedish junior national team, he came on June 6, 2005 in the 2-1 success over the Norwegian junior national team in the Swedish U-21 team to his debut, which he was able to crown with a goal. As a result, he established himself in the selection. In the 2007 season he finally fought for a regular place at Hammarby in the right midfield and was in the starting line-up in 23 top division games.

Change abroad

In January 2009, Zengin left Sweden on loan and moved to Beşiktaş JK . The Turkish club agreed a purchase option with HIF at the end of the six-month loan period. Under coach Mustafa Denizli he came to the summer break to two appearances in the Süper Lig and the Türkiye Kupası and thus contributed to winning the Turkish double . Initially, the club left the option unused, but after it expired, decided to commit Zengins further. After negotiations, the two clubs agreed to transfer the player to Turkey for a transfer fee of 3 million Swedish kronor . Nevertheless, he was not used in the first half of the 2009/10 season . Therefore, he moved to league rivals Eskişehirspor on loan until the end of the season .

After good performance, the club decided to take the purchase option and brought Zengin to Eskişehir , where he initially signed a two-year contract. Through good performances he established himself as a regular player, alongside Volkan Yaman , Sezer Öztürk and Safet Nadarević , he finished seventh in the table with the club in the 2010/11 season . In the following season he was temporarily slowed down by injuries before he moved into the focus of the Swedish national coach Erik Hamrén after good performances in the Turkish championship during the 2012/13 season . This nominated him in March 2013 for the upcoming qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup against Ireland for the first time in the national team. With this he stayed without playing time, but a few days later he made his debut on March 26 on the occasion of a friendly game against Slovakia in the starting lineup in the national team.

During the 2014/15 winter break, Zeingin moved to league rivals Trabzonspor . In the summer he returned to Eskişehirspor, which meanwhile played in the TFF 1st league back. After this club could no longer pay the wages due to the peräkeren financial situation, he dissolved his contract in March 2108 by mutual agreement and spent the rest of the season at Hammarby IF . In the summer of 2018, he moved to the Istanbul third division club Fatih Karagümrük SK .

National team

Zengin was discovered during his time at Hammarby IF for the Turkish national youth teams and in 2002 played several times for the Turkish U-18 and U-19 national teams. According to his own statements, he received a total of twelve nominations and was used eight times. However, according to the Turkish Football Association, he played twice for the Turkish U-18s and once for the U-19s . Since he suffered from fear of flying at the time and his parents did not want to send him to the two-week camps of the Turkish national youth teams, he no longer played for the Turkish national youth teams.

He was later nominated for the Swedish U-21 national team and then decided to play for the Swedish U-21 from now on. So he made his debut on June 6, 2005 in a 2-1 victory over the Norwegian U-21 national team , which he could crown with a goal. As a result, he was a regular player in the Swedish U-21s for two years.

After he moved to Turkey and developed into one of the best players in his position with the first division club Eskişehirspor , he was suggested by the specialist press as a candidate for the Turkish national team . He himself stated several times that if he was nominated, he would choose the Turkish national team. In the 2012/13 season he showed a significant increase in performance, especially after working with his club coach Ersun Yanal and was presented by the trade press as one of the two players with the most development.

Despite these developments, Zengin was not considered for a long time by the Turkish national coach Abdullah Avcı in the national team nominations . In the meantime, the Swedish coach was Erik Hamrén attention Zengin and nominated him as part of the WM2014 - qualifying matches against the Irish national team in the squad of the Swedish national team . After his nomination for the Swedish national team, he revised his earlier statements regarding his national team election and stated that he had already decided on Sweden beforehand. He justified this with the fact that his family lived in Sweden and he grew up there.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Sweden's squad. His only appearance was in the last group game against Belgium. Shortly after his substitution, the winning goal fell for the opponent, which sealed the elimination of the Swedes from the tournament.
