Mateja Kežman ( Serbian - Cyrillic Матеја Кежман ; born April 12, 1979 in Belgrade - Zemun , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Serbian soccer player who was three times top scorer in the Dutch honor division between 2000 and 2005.

Career

In the club

Kežman has played as a striker since the beginning of his career . From 1997 to 1998 he was with FK Sartid and then moved to the Serbian club FK Partizan Belgrade , for which he played between 1998 and 2000. It was here that European scouts first noticed him, whereupon he moved to PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2000 to transfer the equivalent of 14 million euros .

Kežman used his talent and developed steadily, so that he became one of the best strikers in the Netherlands' honor division . In 2003 he was the Netherlands' Footballer of the Year . Kežman was the top scorer three times in the Netherlands in the 2000/01 , 2003/04 and 2004/05 seasons . At PSV he scored 111 goals in 132 games. In Eindhoven he was also nicknamed "Batman".

With the money from owner Roman Abramowitsch , Chelsea FC signed Kežman and his strike partner Arjen Robben for the 2004/05 season . However, his career upswing at Chelsea was slowed down because he was mostly only used as a substitute behind the other Chelsea strikers.

For the 2005/06 season Kežman was signed for nine million euros by the Spanish club Atlético Madrid . In August 2006 he moved to the Turkish club Fenerbahçe Istanbul for seven million euros , where he signed a four-year contract.

After two seasons at Fenerbahçe, Kežman moved to France on loan to Paris Saint-Germain . He was initially loaned for a year. In July 2009, Paris used an agreed purchase option of 4.5 million euros. However, he was loaned to Zenit Saint Petersburg in August 2009 until the end of the Russian league season. In early 2010 Kežman played again for Paris SG. In early November 2010, the striker's contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

In November 2010, Kezman signed a contract with South China AA. In the association team from Hong Kong he played together with the former England international Nicky Butt . He continued his active career in 2011 with a little more than three months at the Belarusian club BATE Baryssau , for which he played six times in the Vyshejaya Liha and five times in the Champions League . His engagement in Barysaw ended on December 31, 2011.

He ended his career in early 2012.

In the national team

Mateja Kežman played 49 games and scored 17 goals for the national team of Serbia and Montenegro .

Kežman holds the record for the fastest red card in a European football championship . At the EM 2000 in Belgium and the Netherlands , he was sent off with a red card by referee Hugh Dallas in the group game against Norway 37 seconds after his substitution due to a rude foul on Erik Mykland .
