The South China AA (SCAA) is a football club from Hong Kong . SCAA currently plays in the country's highest league, the Hong Kong First Division League . The team plays its home games in the Hong Kong Stadium. SCAA is the national record holder in championships and national cup competitions. SCAA alone was champion 41 times, most recently in 2012/13.
Club history
In 1904 the Chinese Football Team was founded by students . Six years later, in 1910, the name was changed to South China Football Club. At the beginning of the 1920s, the current name South China AA was adopted. Collecting titles began early on. The first was the championship in 1923/24. Until the beginning of the 1980s, only local players were allowed to play for the association team. But after professional football was introduced in Hong Kong and many other clubs employed foreign players, this internal association rule was dropped. On November 2, 1981, the 60-year-old rule was dropped by vote. In the same season 1981/82, the team managed to narrowly escape relegation. After an important game against the later relegated Caroline Hill , violent riots broke out outside the stadium. These riots are considered to be the second most violent in Hong Kong's history.
At the end of the 2005/06 season, South China was again on a relegation zone. Only the increase in the league to ten clubs prevented relegation. Then the team struck back and was able to become champions twice in a row.
The greatest continental success was achieved in 1993/94, when they made it to the final of the AFC Cup Winners' Cup . There they lost to al-Qadisiya al-Chubar from Saudi Arabia in the final 6-2.
