Afonso Alves Martins Jr (born January 30, 1981 in Belo Horizonte ) is a former Brazilian soccer player .

Alves is a fast and tech-savvy player, and one of the great strengths of the right footer is direct free kicks.

Career

In the club

The attacker was under contract with SC Heerenveen from 2006 to 2008 , previously he was employed in the Swedish league , whose title he won in 2004 with Malmö FF ; his hometown club is Atlético Mineiro .

In the 2006/2007 season he was the top scorer in the Dutch league with 34 goals scored in 31 games .

Alves drew attention on October 7, 2007 when he contributed seven goals to the 9-0 of his club in the league game against Heracles Almelo . He did 2 hat tricks: Once between the 10th and 19th minute and later between the 68th and 76th minute, when he even scored 4 times.

In the list published by the IFFHS of the world's best top scorers in 2007, he is in first place ahead of Eduardo Alves da Silva . In just 31 league games, he scored 34 times, making him the most efficient striker of the year.

Shortly before the end of the transfer window, Alves moved to Middlesbrough FC in January 2008 for an undisclosed fee . The club reported that it was his most expensive transfer to date. Alves scored his first two league goals in a 2-2 draw against Manchester United on April 6, 2008.

Shortly before the end of a disappointing season for Alves and his club, in which he only managed 4 goals in the league, the striker broke his metatarsal bone in a relegation duel against Newcastle United when Nicky Butt fouled .

For the 2009/10 season he left Middlesbrough and moved to Al-Sadd in Qatar for about 12 million euros . Alves signed a three-year contract there.

On June 1, 2007, he made his debut for the Brazilian national team in the first international match for the English national team at the new Wembley Stadium . He came on for Kaká in the 72nd minute .
