Jari Olavi Litmanen [ ˈjɑri ˈlitmɑnɛn ] (born February 20, 1971 in Lahti ) is a former Finnish soccer player who was last under contract with HJK Helsinki . He is the record player and record scorer for the Finnish national soccer team and is considered one of the best Finnish soccer players of all time.
society
At the age of 16 he made his debut with the Finnish club Lahden Reipas . For the club he scored 28 goals in 86 league games. He then moved to Finland's capital, where he played for HJK Helsinki in 1991 . In 1992 he was under contract with Myllykosken Pallo and won the national cup competition. Between 1992 and 1999 Litmanen ran for the Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam and scored 126 goals in 224 games. He won the Champions League and became a world cup winner . Four times he was in the Netherlands champion and three times cup winners . After his time at Ajax, he moved to FC Barcelona , for whom he played from 1999 to 2001. With Liverpool FC , Jari Litmanen became a UEFA Cup winner and English league cup winner a year later .
Litmanen signed again with Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2002 before returning to his Finnish homeland in 2004. In February 2005 he moved from FC Lahti , which arose from the merger of his hometown club Lahden Reipas with FC Kuusysi , to Hansa Rostock , who was then threatened with relegation in the Bundesliga . After Hansa was relegated from the first Bundesliga, Litmanen rejected an offer from the North Germans for the second division and moved to Malmö FF in the highest Swedish league.
In 2007 Litmanen fell out for several months after surgery on his Achilles tendon. After his contract with Malmö expired on December 31, 2007, he moved to English first division club Fulham in January 2008 . There he met the former Finnish national coach Roy Hodgson .
Litmanen made his debut for Fulham on March 31, 2008, in a match between the club's reserve team and Tottenham Hotspur's reserves . He scored his first goal with a penalty five minutes before half-time. He was substituted in the 63rd minute and Fulham lost the game 3-1 in the end.
In May 2008 the contract with Litmanen was terminated. He didn't play a single game for the professional team.
Litmanen then played again from August 8, 2008 at FC Lahti and scored two goals in his first game and prepared two more goals. The contract ran until the end of 2010. In April 2011 Litmanen continued his active career at HJK Helsinki , where he signed a contract until the end of the calendar year. At the age of 40, he won the Finnish championship for the first time in 2011 with Helsinki.
National team
Jari Litmanen played his first of 137 international matches (32 goals) on October 22, 1989. The Finnish national football team won this game 1-0 against Trinidad and Tobago . He is the record national player and the most successful goalscorer in his country, but was not able to take part in any European or World Cup with the national team. After the 1-1 draw in Liechtenstein on September 9, 2009, when he scored his 31st international goal, qualifying for the World Cup in South Africa was no longer possible.
On October 22, 2010, the 21st anniversary of his international debut, he overtook Lothar Matthäus , who was national player for Germany for 20 years (1980-2000). He played his last international match on November 17, 2010 in an 8-0 win against San Marino, where he scored the 6-0 with a penalty. He then resigned from the national team. He is both the first and only football player in the world to have played full international matches in four different decades.
