Petrus "Pierre" Ferdinandus Johannes van Hooijdonk (born November 29, 1969 in Steenbergen , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player .

Career

His active clubs were RBC Roosendaal , NAC Breda , Celtic Glasgow , Nottingham Forest , Vitesse Arnhem , Benfica Lisbon , Feyenoord Rotterdam and Fenerbahçe Istanbul . He experienced his most successful period at Feyenoord Rotterdam when he won the UEFA Cup with Feyenoord in 2002 . In the final in De Kuip against Borussia Dortmund , he made a significant contribution to the 3-2 victory with his two goals. He also had a successful time at Fenerbahçe Istanbul, where he was twice champion.

In summer 2005 he moved from Fenerbahçe to NAC Breda, but returned to Feyenoord Rotterdam in January 2006. Here he ended his active career in May 2007 after the playoff games, in which Feyenoord missed it for the first time since 1991 to qualify for a European competition. In his last game, the second leg of the first playoff round, van Hooijdonk scored the 1-1 draw against FC Groningen ; However, that was not enough for the Rotterdam team after their 2-1 defeat in the first leg.

He played 46 times for the Dutch national team and took part in the 1998 World Cup , the 2000 European Championship and the 2004 European Championship . The goal-scoring striker also demonstrated his qualities in the national team. His precise free kicks were feared. Van Hooijdonk was considered strong in tackles and, despite his size, technically adept. At the 1998 World Cup he scored a goal in three games, although he was nominated for the 2000 European Championship, he was not used, and in the 2004 European Championship qualification he scored once in four games.

On February 3, 2011, he signed a contract as assistant coach of the Turkish national soccer team and stood by his compatriot and national coach of the Turkish federation, Guus Hiddink . The contract should run until the end of the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine. As a scout in Germany, England and the Netherlands he was responsible for looking for suitable players with Turkish roots. He recommended Gökhan Töre , Mehmet Ekici , Ömer Toprak and Sercan Sararer for the Turkish national team. After the Turkish national team failed to qualify for the European Championship finals, the Turkish Football Association also split from van Hooijdonk. In the 2013/14 season, he and Patrick Lodewijks looked after Jong Feyenoord / Excelsior Rotterdam in Beloften Division B. He also works for the Dutch radio and television broadcaster NOS , where he analyzes football matches on the NOS Studio Voetbal program.
