Walter Pandiani , full name Walter Gerardo Pandiani Urquiza , (born April 27, 1976 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Player career

society

Striker Walter Pandiani began his career in the domestic Uruguayan league in 1996 and played for the professional clubs Club Atlético Progreso , Club Atlético Basáñez and Club Atlético Peñarol , where he was able to distinguish himself several times as a goalscorer. Then in 2000 he went to Europe. He moved to the Primera División for Deportivo La Coruña , where he played for five years from now on - with a break from 2002 to 2003 when he was on loan at RCD Mallorca for a short time . With La Coruña he played in the Champions League (11 goals in 37 games), was runner-up in 2002 and scored 31 goals in 86 league games with this club. When Pandiani fell out with his coach Javier Irureta , Depor loaned Pandiani to Birmingham City in January 2005 . There Pandiani hit the same against the big teams from Arsenal , Chelsea and Liverpool , which made him a crowd favorite and Birmingham prompting to take him for the season 2005/06 under contract. He signed a three-year contract with Birmingham which transferred five million euros to Depor for Pandiani. However, due to difficulties in adapting, he lost his marksmanship, so he returned to the Spanish league in January 2006 and moved to Espanyol Barcelona . The transfer fee was 1.5 million euros. With this club he immediately won the Spanish Cup in 2006 . The following year he played very successfully with Espanyol in the UEFA Cup. Espanyol reached the final and he became the top scorer of the competition . He was also the only Espanyol player to convert his penalty on penalties in the final against Sevilla FC . Walter Pandiani sat on the bench in the final, as was so often the case at the beginning, even though he had scored a three-pack against Real Madrid four days earlier . His eleven goals in 14 appearances in the 2006/07 UEFA Cup can only surpass three other players in the history of the UEFA Cup.

According to media reports, VfL Wolfsburg was interested in signing Walter Pandiani in summer 2007 , who was only second choice behind Raúl Tamudo and Luis García at Espanyol despite his respectable goal rate . Wolfsburg had already agreed with Espanyol on the transfer fee of two million euros. However, there was no agreement with the player. Pandiani moved to CA Osasuna in the summer , where he signed a three-year contract. He scored 27 goals in 92 games. In 2011, Pandiani returned to Espanyol Barcelona , scoring three goals in 16 league games.

For the 2012/13 season , Pandiani moved to Villarreal in the Segunda División . After he dissolved his contract after 17 completed league games (two goals) at Villarreal, it was announced on January 27, 2013 that Pandiani has joined the Spanish club Atlético Baleares, which is competing in Segunda B. He was accompanied by his son Nicolás (* 1993), who will play for the local youth team in the future. In the 2012/13 season, Pandiani was on the pitch nine times and scored one goal. Then Pandani returned to his home country and joined the first division promoted Miramar Misiones in the 2013/14 season . There he completed 19 league games by the end of the season, in which he scored five goals. In December 2014, Pandiani, now without a club, announced that he had not yet finished his active career and that he would start again if he found a suitable offer. It was only in July 2015 that he joined the Swiss second division club FC Lausanne-Sport . For this he played 15 times (one goal) in the Challenge League in the 2015/16 season . On June 16, 2016, he announced the end of his career via Twitter.

Walter Pandiani's debut for the Uruguayan national soccer team took place on March 28, 2001 in the World Cup qualifier against Paraguay. Since then, he has played a friendly international game and two more international matches in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup , in which he could not score a goal. The last use for the Celeste took place on June 1, 2004 in the qualifying game against the Peruvian selection.
