Geertruida Maria Geels (pronunciation: [ ˈɣeːr.ˌtrœy̯.da ˈmaː.ria ˈɣeːls ]) called Ruud (pronunciation: [ ˈryt ]) (born July 28, 1948 ) is a former Dutch football player .
Career
society
Geels began his career in the youth teams of RKVV DSS and RKSV Onze Gezellen. In 1964 he came to Stormvogels Telstar and has already scored five goals in just eight games. In 1966 he moved to the major Dutch club Feyenoord Rotterdam. In 1969, Geels won the Dutch double (cup and championship) in Rotterdam . In the 1969/70 European Champion Clubs' Cup , he played four games with six goals. In the final on May 6, 1970 in Milan against Celtic Glasgow - coach Ernst Happel's team won 2-1 goals in extra time - he was not used. After the success with Feyenoord he went to the Go Ahead Eagles from Deventer . After two years with the Adler, he tried his luck in Belgium at Club Bruges . 1973 Geels became Belgian champion. He returned to his home country a year later and was under contract with Ajax Amsterdam for four years. He became champion in the Netherlands for the second time in 1977. In 1978 he moved back to Belgium and was under contract with RSC Anderlecht for a year. He then played for two years with Sparta Rotterdam, one year with PSV Eindhoven and at the end of his career he was under contract with NAC Breda for two more years. He was the top scorer in the Dutch top division from 1975 to 1978 and was able to win this title for the fifth time in 1981. From 1965/66 to 1983/84, Geels scored 318 goals in 483 league games.
National team
Internationally, he played 20 times for the Netherlands and scored eleven goals. He made his debut in the "Oranje" team at the international match on March 27, 1974 in Rotterdam against Austria. At the 1974 World Cup in Germany , he was a member of the squad, but was not used. He also took part in the 1976 European Championship in Yugoslavia , where he successfully netted 3-2 in the game for third place. At the 1978 World Cup in Argentina - "Ruud" had won the top scorer's crown four times in a row from 1975 to 1978 - he was not a member of the squad. With his 20th appearance in the 3-0 win on October 14, 1981 in Rotterdam against Belgium, he said goodbye to the national team.
