Luc Nilis (born May 25, 1967 in Hasselt ) is a former Belgian football player . After the end of his active career, he worked, among other things, as a scout or assistant coach. Since the summer of 2013, when his contract as assistant coach at Gençlerbirliği Ankara expired, the Belgian has been considered to be without a club.
His son Arne, born in 1991, is also active as a football player, but has not yet got beyond the third division.
Career
Nilis was one of the most dangerous strikers of the 1990s who caused a sensation, especially with his spectacular goals. He began his professional career at RSC Anderlecht , where he matured to become a world-class striker and Belgian national player . With the Belgian team he took part in the 1994 World Cup in the USA , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Germany . After the World Cup tournament, he moved to the Netherlands for PSV Eindhoven . After his first season in Eindhoven , he was voted Dutch Footballer of the Year .
As a national player, he played again for Belgium at the 1998 World Cup in France . Nilis stayed in Eindhoven until 2000 despite numerous attempts to poach, mainly from British clubs. It was not until he was 33 that he moved to the Premier League at Aston Villa after the 2000 European Championship . He was so badly injured on September 9, 2000 in a league game against Ipswich Town that he had to end his career in January 2001.
