Life
Marcel van Basten was born on October 31, 1964 as the youngest of three children of the former soccer player Joop van Basten and his wife Leny in the Surinamestraat . Since his maternal grandmother had problems with the name “Marcel”, she called him “Marco” without further ado.
He attended St. Dominicus Elementary School and later the general secondary Niels Stensen College in Utrecht . In his youth he played table tennis in addition to soccer .
Player career
In the club
Ajax Amsterdam
He first played for UVV Utrecht (1970-80) and Elinkwijk Utrecht (1981/82) until he moved to Ajax Amsterdam in 1982 . Van Basten made his professional debut in April 1982 when he came on for Johan Cruyff in the 5-0 win over NEC Nijmegen . In this game he also scored his first goal for his new club.
In the 1982/83 season he was still in the shadow of Wim Kieft . But this was sold the following year to the Italian Serie A representative Pisa Calcio . From 1984 to 1987 van Basten was the top scorer of the Dutch league and developed into one of the top strikers of the 1980s. In 1986 he even became Europe's top scorer. This season he scored 37 goals in 26 games. In 1987 van Basten was in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the game against 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig , he scored the decisive goal.
AC Milan
After this title he moved to AC Milan , where he played with fellow countrymen Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard . With van Basten, AC Milan won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1989 and 1990 . Towards the end of his career, he had to sit out repeatedly due to a serious ankle injury. Van Basten played his last competitive game for Milan in the Champions League final against Olympique Marseille on May 26, 1993.
Due to his ankle injury and knee problems, he then had to sit out again, but could no longer play as a professional footballer despite intensive efforts and finally resigned in 1995 as a sports invalid .
In the national team
Between September 1983 and October 1992 van Basten completed 58 international matches (24 goals) for the Dutch national soccer team . The highlight was winning the European Football Championship in Germany in 1988 , where he was also the top scorer with five goals. His goal to make it 2-0 in the final against the USSR (he overtook Rinat Dassajew from an acute angle ) was voted goal of the month for June by the viewers of the sports show . After the tournament he was voted the best player of the tournament.

Coaching career
Marco van Basten began his coaching career in the 2003/04 season with the youth team of Ajax Amsterdam.
Dutch national team
From July 29, 2004, van Basten was coach of the Dutch national team ( Bondscoach ); John van 't Schip , who already worked with van Basten at Ajax Amsterdam, became assistant coach .
With van Basten came a change in the national team. Players like Clarence Seedorf , Patrick Kluivert , Edgar Davids , Roy Makaay and Mark van Bommel were no longer nominated. For a long time, the three big Dutch teams ( Ajax Amsterdam , Feyenoord Rotterdam , PSV Eindhoven ) provided the basic structure of the Elftal. But van Basten gave young players like Denny Landzaat , Barry Opdam , Barry van Galen , Ron Vlaar , Jan Kromkamp and Joris Mathijsen from the newcomer AZ Alkmaar the opportunity to prove themselves. He also gave other players such as Khalid Boulahrouz , Hedwiges Maduro , Ryan Babel and Romeo Castelen a chance. Under his direction, the team remained unbeaten in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup . However, van Bsten's first major tournament as a bond coach, the 2006 World Cup in Germany, ended early for his team: In the round of 16, the Netherlands failed against the Portugal national team with 0: 1 . Due to the banishment of Ruud van Nistelroy to the bank, van Basten was heavily criticized. Van Nistelrooy announced shortly afterwards that he would never play for the national team again while Van Basten was coach. In May 2007 there was a reconciliation and van Nistelrooy became an integral part of the Dutch selection again.
In December 2007, van Basten announced that he would give up his post after the 2008 European Football Championship . In the group stage of Euro 2008, the team qualified for the quarterfinals and were eliminated after a 3-1 defeat by Russia . It was the last game for van Basten as national coach.
Ajax Amsterdam
At the beginning of the 2008/09 season, van Basten was coach of Ajax Amsterdam as the successor to interim coach Adrie Koster . On February 22, 2008, he signed a four-year contract. On May 6, 2009, he resigned due to lack of success. He was replaced by Martin Jol .
SC Heerenveen
For the 2012/13 season, van Basten took over from Ron Jans as coach of the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen . He signed a two-year contract.
AZ Alkmaar
After the contract expired, he moved to AZ Alkmaar as the successor to Dick Advocaat . He signed a contract until 2016. Due to health problems, however, he was no longer able to carry out his office a few months later and in September switched to the position of assistant coach under his successor John van den Brom .
Renewed activity for the Netherlands
Before his contract expired, he returned to the Dutch national team in the summer of 2015 as assistant to the new national coach Danny Blind . He signed a contract until after the 2018 World Cup in Russia , from which he resigned in September 2016.
Technical advisor to FIFA
In September 2016 van Basten was appointed Chief Representative of FIFA for Technical Development and caused a sensation in January 2017 when, in addition to adopting various rules from hockey and ice hockey, he also made offside available .
