The Ballon d'Or was originally only awarded to European players who played in Europe. From 1995, non-European players from European clubs could also be elected. The Ballon d'Or winner was therefore named Europe's Footballer of the Year . Since all players from around the world have been able to be voted for since 2007, the Ballon d'Or, like the award given by FIFA, represents the World Footballer of the Year . The Ballon d'Or is considered to be the more prestigious of the two honors. From 2010 to 2015, France Football and FIFA jointly awarded the FIFA Ballon d'Or.
