Ron Peter Vlaar (born February 16, 1985 in Hensbroek ) is a Dutch football player who plays as a defender for AZ Alkmaar .

Career

As a child, Vlaar played for Apollo'68 for six years before moving to SVW'27 in Heerhugowaard . Here he drew attention to himself in the D-youth scouts from AZ Alkmaar , who brought him into the youth of the honorary division . Vlaar was active at AZ for eight and a half years, and his professional career began here in the 2004/05 season . For the away game in Waalwijk on April 23, 2005, the 1.89-meter-tall defender slipped into the first team, who were unlucky with injuries. Just five days later he made his first international appearance in the UEFA Cup semi-final against Sporting Lisbon ; He was also in the second leg when AZ had to accept a goal from Miguel Garcia in the 120th minute and missed the final by seconds due to the away goal rule . Vlaar made two more league games in the 2004/05 season, seven in the following season for AZ, plus two more UEFA Cup games . In October 2005 he was appointed to the national team for the first time .

During the winter break, Vlaar moved to Feyenoord , where he got a regular place with his first match on January 15, 2006 at Vitesse Arnheim . He made 16 games for the Rotterdam team by the end of the season. In the 2006/07 season he missed a large part of the first half of the season due to an injury, but fought his way back to the team before the winter break and scored his first league goal on December 17, 2006 at FC Utrecht . The 2007/08 season also got off to a promising start until Vlaar had to be replaced in the 41st minute injured in the game in Kerkrade on September 16, 2007 . The rest of this and the entire 2008/09 season he had to suspend because of the cruciate ligament injury on his left knee and a tear in his foot; nevertheless Feyenoord extended his contract until 2012. With the beginning of the 2009/10 season he returned to the team. By March 2010, he made 25 Eredivisie games for the Rotterdam team and scored two goals, including the winning goal at FC Groningen to make it 3-2 in the last minute after Groningen had made up a 2-0 deficit just two minutes earlier.

In summer 2012 Vlaar left Feyenoord for England. He signed a three-year contract with the Premier League club Aston Villa, which binds him to the Birmingham team until 2015 . Vlaar, who had been without a club since August 2015, rejoined his former club AZ Alkmaar in December. His contract is valid until the end of the 2015/2016 season. After two extensions, it is now valid until summer 2020.

National team

Vlaar drew attention to himself in 2005 with a good performance at AZ and at the European Junior Championships , where he reached the quarter-finals with the hosts. Bond coach Marco van Basten appointed him to the senior squad , in which he made his debut on October 8, 2005 in a 2-0 win in the World Cup qualifier against the Czech Republic in Prague , when he played for Khalid from Hamburg in the 57th minute Boulahrouz was substituted on. In the next match against Macedonia he was not used, but received a place in the starting XI in the friendly against Italy on November 12, 2005 . After he scored an own goal in the 3-1 defeat in Amsterdam just before half-time and his opponent Luca Toni scored another goal after the break, he was replaced in the 60th minute by André Ooijer . His international career in the A-selection seemed over. With the U-21 selection , he became European champion in 2006. In 2007 he became captain of the U-21; his team defended their title at the U-21 European Championship . After a long injury he played his way back to the senior squad as an alternative in central defense through good performances at Feyenoord in the 2009/10 season ; Bert van Marwijk changed him on March 3, 2010 in a friendly against the USA after half-time for Joris Mathijsen . After the 2010 World Cup , van Marwijk appointed Vlaar captain of the Oranje team, which played in the first friendly match of the 2010/11 season in Ukraine on August 11, 2010 . In the squad for this match, however, the players used at the World Cup in South Africa were missing.

For the 2012 European Ron Vlaar was in the squad and so had his first major tournament in the squad of the senior team. This tournament was disappointing for him as well as for the entire Elftal . Nevertheless, Vlaar was still an important cornerstone in defense and was used in almost every game during the successful qualification for the 2014 World Cup under coach van Gaal. At the world championship itself, Vlaar played in each of the 7 tournament games and was able to look forward to the bronze medal in the end.
