Dennis Viollet

Dennis Sydney Viollet (born September 20, 1933 in Manchester , † March 6, 1999 in Jacksonville , Florida ) was an English football player and football coach .

life and career

Player career

Viollet joined Manchester United on September 1, 1949 . The striker got his first professional contract in 1950 and made his debut on April 11, 1953 against Newcastle United . He was English champions with Manchester United in 1956 and 1957.

Viollet was one of the survivors of the plane crash in Munich on February 6, 1958, in which 23 people died, including eight of his teammates.

In total, he played 291 times for Manchester United and scored 178 goals. During his time at this club, he played twice in the English national team in games against Hungary and Luxembourg . In 1962 he was surprisingly sold to Stoke City by Matt Busby . In this team he played with Stanley Matthews . The striker made 207 games for Stoke City, scoring 66 goals. After five years, he ended his career prematurely. In 1967 Viollet made a comeback in the top American league with the Baltimore Bays for a year . After his return to England he played briefly with Witton Albion. He finally ended his playing career at FC Linfield in Northern Ireland , with whom he won the Northern Irish Cup in 1970 as player-coach.

Coaching career

When Viollet finished his playing career, he coached Preston North End and Crewe Alexandra in 1971 . In the 1980s he went back to the USA, first as an assistant coach, then later as coach of the Jacksonville team. His next club in the US were the Richmond Kickers, with whom he won the American double. The last club was Jacksonville Cyclones in the 1997/98 season.

On March 6, 1999 Dennis Viollet died at the age of 65 years to cancer . He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of American Football and a Florida University Cup was named after him.
