John James Campbell (also known as Johnny Campbell ; born September 12, 1871 in Glasgow , † December 2, 1947 ) was a Scottish football player . In his playing career, which lasted from 1890 to 1906, the attacker won numerous titles in Scotland and England.
Career
John Campbell began his career at St. Alexandra's from the Scottish city of Glasgow . Shortly afterwards he played for the Glasgow clubs Benburb and Celtic . Campbell won the Glasgow Cup twice with Celtic . In the senior division, he won other titles, including the Scottish Cup and the championship in Scotland in the seasons 1892/93 and 1893/94 .
In the summer of 1895 Campbell moved to the English club Aston Villa . Here he scored 38 goals in 55 league games in two seasons. In the season 1895/96 he was the top scorer in the highest English football league, the First Division, with 26 goals in 26 games . With the team he became a master, the following year he won the double of league title and FA Cup . He also scored the first goal in the newly opened Villa Park on April 17, 1897 against the Blackburn Rovers . A few months later he was back in the squad of Celtic FC, with whom he won two more cups by 1903 and the championship in his home country in 1898 . From 1903 to 1906 he still played for the former military club Third Lanark , with which he was champion in 1904 and cup winner in 1905.
From 1893 to 1903 Campbell completed twelve caps for Scotland , in which he scored five goals. He made his debut on March 25, 1893 in Glasgow against Northern Ireland , which ended 6-1. Campbell scored his first goals in the fifth international match during the British Home Championship 1899/1900 against Ireland . With the Scottish national team, he won the British Home Championship three times .
