Ian Edward Wright , MBE , (born November 3, 1963 in Woolwich , London ) is a former English football player and is now best known in the British television and radio media .

Career as a soccer player

Wright found his way into professional football relatively late. After failing at both Millwall FC and Brighton & Hove Albion , he played at amateur clubs all the way to Greenwich Borough , during which he worked as a worker and plasterer . When he became aware of Crystal Palace's talent scout Peter Prentice, Wright signed with Wright in 1985 at the age of 22. Satch , as he was named after Louis Armstrong during his career , stayed with Palace for six years and was elected to the club's eleven of the century in 2005 .

In his first season, Wright found his way into the regular formation, scored nine goals and was the second most successful goalscorer for his club behind Phil Barber . When Mark Bright Palace joined in the following year , Wright formed a successful storm duo with this, which made a major contribution to promotion to the First Division in 1989, which Palace ensured via the play-offs .

Wright was then appointed to the English national B team in December 1989, but a double fracture of the shin prevented a successful start in the English elite league. After he had recovered from the injury, he scored in the final of the FA Cup as a substitute shortly before the end to equalize against Manchester United and thus forced an extension . The game then ended 3: 3 and in the replay game Palace lost 0: 1.

In the following season Wright made his debut for the England team and scored his 100th goal for Palace. He met twice, when the club in the final of the Zenith Data Systems Cup against Everton could win. Another highlight of this championship round was his hat trick within just 18 minutes in the penultimate game of the season against Wimbledon , where he underlined his scoring risk at that time.

He then moved to Arsenal for £ 2.5million in 1991 , which was the record transfer fee for Arsenal at the time. In his first game he scored in a draw in the League Cup against Leicester City and followed up with a hat trick in the first league game against FC Southampton . At the end of the season, Wright was the league's top scorer, which would also be the first of six straight years as Arsenal's top scorer. Wright was instrumental in the success of his club in the 1990s and won the FA Cup and League Cup double in 1993, scoring a goal in the FA Cup final both in the first game and in the replay. Wright reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup with Arsenal in 1994 , but was banned there and could therefore not appear in the 1-0 win against AC Parma .

Wright scored one goal in every round of the European Cup Winners' Cup, excluding the final. However, the arrival of new coach Bruce Rioch ushered in a difficult period for Wright. Differences arose between Rioch and Wright, which led Wright to ask for clearance to move. However, he later withdrew this request and Wright formed another effective partnership on the offensive with the new addition Dennis Bergkamp .

When Arsène Wenger took up the position of coach at Arsenal in September 1996, Wright was now almost 33 years old. Despite his advanced age, he continued to score regularly and on September 13, 1997 with a hat-trick against the Bolton Wanderers surpassed the previous record of Cliff Bastin , which was again overtaken by Thierry Henry in October 2005 . A few months later, Wright sustained an Achilles tendon injury during the season in which Arsenal won the English Championship and FA Cup . During the English Cup final against Newcastle United , Wright was back on the bench, but was not used.

In the summer of 1998 Wright moved to West Ham United , where he could not confirm the performances shown at Arsenal in the nine months he completed there. He then played for a short time each at Nottingham Forest , Celtic Glasgow and Burnley FC (which he helped advance to the second division) before ending his football career in 2000.

Wright started his way into the English national team in 1991 as a player for Crystal Palace, but was not nominated for the squad for the 1992 European Championship in Sweden a short time later . Wright was never able to confirm the form achieved at Arsenal for England. His winning goal in the qualifier for the 1994 World Cup in the USA against Poland could not prevent Graham Taylor's team from qualifying. Under Terry Venables , Wright came only to sporadic missions, which improved after Glenn Hoddle took over responsibility. With England he won the Tournoi de France in 1997 , a preparatory tournament for the subsequent World Cup in France . However, due to the Achilles tendon problems, Wright missed the 1998 World Cup itself.

In 2005, Wright was inducted into the English Hall of Fame for his services to English football .

Wright was awarded the Order of the British Empire in 2000.

Media career

After his football career, Wright became a popular figure in the English media. His participation in the program Match of the Day is characterized by a passionate, slightly eccentric and patriotic view of the games to be analyzed, especially his appearances during the 2002 World Cup in Japan , when he always presented himself in a kimono . Wright is also known for his own talk show Friday Night's All Wright , which he started in 1998 when he was still a footballer. Since then, Wright has appeared on programs such as The National Lottery Wright Around the World , Friends Like These and the Wright & Bright radio show , which he started with his former teammate Mark Bright. In addition to other appearances in Guinness World Records and What Kids Really Think , he can currently be seen as team captain on the game show They Think It's All Over , broadcast by the BBC .

In 1993 Ian Wright recorded the song Do the right Thing with the well-known Arsenal London fan Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys .
