Robert Alfred "Bobby" Smith (born February 22, 1933 in Lingdale , North Yorkshire , † September 18, 2010 in the London Borough of Enfield ) was an English football player who played for Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea FC in the course of his career .

Career

Bobby Smith began his professional career at Chelsea at the age of 17. He was a strong and powerful center forward who scored a total of 218 goals in 376 games in the English Premier League for Chelsea (1950–1955), Tottenham Hotspur (1955–1964) and Brighton & Hove Albion (1964–1965). When Chelsea won the championship in the 1954/55 season, Smith only made four appearances, with Roy Bentley holding the position of center forward . In December 1955 Smith moved for a transfer fee of 16,000 pounds to league rivals Tottenham Hotspur, whom he saved with his goals from looming relegation in 1956 . Only a year later Tottenham Hotspur became English runners-up with him and in 1957/58 Bobby Smith was the winner of the “Golden Boot” , with 36 goals he was England's top scorer, in the following season he scored 32 league goals. During this time under coach Bill Nicholson , the striker and his club celebrated great successes. In the 1960/61 season, Tottenham Hotspur scored their first double in the 20th century - they won the FA Cup and the championship , not least thanks to Bobby Smith's 28 league goals. The next year the team won the FA Cup again and made it to the semi-finals of the European Cup . Smith formed together with the six-time winner of the top scorer's crown, Jimmy Greaves , an almost unstoppable attacking duo. In the 1962/63 season, Bobby Smith and Tottenham became the first British club to win the European Cup Winners' Cup by beating defending champions Atlético Madrid 5-1 . In the same year he was again English runner-up with the Spurs. In his nine years at Tottenham Hotspur, the center forward scored a total of 208 hits in 317 appearances, placing Bobby Smith in the club's Hall of Fame second among the top scorers of all time, behind Jimmy Greaves.

At the end of his professional career Smith was 1964/65 with Brighton & Hove Albion champion of the fourth division . He then played in the amateur field at Hastings United and Banbury United.

Robert A. Smith made a total of 15 appearances for the English national football team between 1960 and 1963 , scoring 13 goals, including two in the historic 9-3 win over Scotland at Wembley in 1961.
