Football League First Division 1987/88

The Football League First Division 1988/89 was the 90th season of the highest English football league . It began on August 27, 1988 and ended on May 26, 1989.

In what was probably the most exciting championship race in English premier league football to date, Arsenal relegated defending champions Liverpool FC to second place after Arsenal, which won their ninth league title, won 2-0 at Liverpool on the last match day. Of the promoted FC Millwall , Aston Villa and FC Middlesbrough only the latter club did not hold the class and was relegated straight back to the Second Division . In addition, West Ham United and Newcastle United went into the second division. The relegated should be replaced in the following season by the newly promoted FC Chelsea , Manchester City and Crystal Palace .

A total of 450 players were used, with Arsenal FC having the least with 17 and Newcastle United having the most players in league games with 35. 96 newcomers were opposed to 94 footballers who were used for the last time in the 1988/89 season. 24 players played all 38 league games of their club.

    The Arsenal FC championship team

The following list shows all players who played in a league match for Arsenal FC during the 1988/89 season. In English football, a minimum number of games is usually required in order to receive the official championship medal. Since there was uncertainty about the specific regulation before the introduction of the Premier League, all players who presumably did not receive a championship medal due to their low contribution were marked with an asterisk (*). The number of missions and the goals scored are given in brackets.
