Jovan "John" Lukic (born December 11, 1960 in Chesterfield , England ) is a former English football goalkeeper . He was active in his playing career for the English clubs Leeds United and Arsenal FC .

Player career

Born in Chesterfield to Yugoslav parents, John Lukic made his debut at Leeds United in the English Premier League in 1979 . After his team in the Football League First Division in 1981/82 was relegated to the second division, he spent the 1982/83 season in the Second Division. Leeds could not realize the direct resurgence, whereupon Lukic moved to the first division FC Arsenal for the coming season .

Arsenal finished the First Division in 1983/84 in sixth place and was able to assert itself in the top third of the table for the next two years. Before the start of the 1986/87 season , George Graham took over as coach at Arsenal. The club should celebrate some successes with him in the coming years. The highlight was winning the first English championship in 18 years in the Football League First Division in 1988/89 . Arsenal ended the season level on points with second Liverpool FC and only secured the title on the last day of the match with a 2-0 win at Anfield . After George Graham signed David Seaman , Lukic returned to Leeds United in 1990.

Leeds also had a powerful team at that time and won the first championship title since 1974 in the First Division in 1991/92 . Lukic took part in the newly created UEFA Champions League in 1992 with teammates such as Gordon Strachan , Chris Fairclough , Gary McAllister and Gary Speed / 93 part, but failed there after a first round success over VfB Stuttgart in the second round at the Glasgow Rangers . As champions Leeds finished in the also newly founded Premier League 1992/93 only a disappointing 17th place in the table. By finishing fifth in the 1994/95 Premier League , United qualified for the 1995/96 UEFA Cup , where the team failed significantly in the second round at PSV Eindhoven . In 1996 John Lukic returned to Arsenal after Nigel Martyn was signed as the new goalkeeper.

Lukic, now 35, spent the next four years as a substitute goalkeeper behind David Seaman . The high point was the 1997/98 season , when Arsenal won the championship ahead of series champions Manchester United and also won the FA Cup title with a 2-0 win against Newcastle United . The team, which was very successful over the next two years, was trained by Arsène Wenger . In 2001, John Lukic ended his playing career at the age of 40, having previously played as a substitute goalkeeper in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup final . Arsenal lost the final on penalties to Galatasaray Istanbul .
