Anthony Richard "Tony" Cottee (born July 11, 1965 in Forest Gate ) is a former English football player . As a striker , he was best known as a striker for West Ham United and Everton FC . After the 1986/87 season he was named England's Footballer of the Year in the youth category. He later won Leicester City in 2000 with the League Cup, his only title in English professional football.

Athletic career

Club career

West Ham United (1982-1988)

Cottee was born in the Newham borough of London . After being a supporter of West Ham United as a child , he made his first appearance in the first team for the club at the age of 17. When he was just 20 years old, the young offensive player - at 170 centimeters for a center forward - had already scored 37 first division goals. He formed an extremely successful storm duo with Frank McAvennie in the 1985/86 season and his 20 hits helped the "Hammers" to a surprising third place in the league . He was also named England's Footballer of the Year in the youth division . In the following season 1986/87 he exceeded the previous goal yield, but the performance curve of the club showed overall downwards. After McAvennie's departure to Celtic Glasgow , Cottee only met 13 times in the 1987/88 season, but last year's champions Everton decided to sign the 23-year-old. The club from Liverpool prevailed against their competitors Arsenal .

Everton FC (1988-1994)

Cottee fitted in spectacularly with a hat trick on the first day of the 1988/89 season against Newcastle United at his new employer. In the following years he could not meet the high expectations and at the end of his first year there were ten more league goals and a disappointing eighth league place with the "Toffees" to book. He found himself twice at Wembley Stadium, but despite two goals in the final of the ZDS Cup , he not only lost there against Nottingham Forest but also in the FA Cup against local rivals Liverpool 2: 3 after extra time. Alongside fellow strikers like Mike Newell and Graeme Sharp , Cottee contributed 13 goals again in the 1989/90 league season, but although this resulted in an improved sixth place in the final table, the champions' most successful times of 1985 and 1987 were over for now. Even the return of the former successful coach Howard Kendall in November 1990 brought no visible progress. Cottee came in the 1990/91 season on relatively few ten league hits. A year later, there were only eight in the 1991/92 season in which Cottee had to fight with injuries (with only 24 missions). After a so to speak mixed debut season 1992/93 in midfield of the new Premier League with twelve goals, he managed the highest scoring for Everton in the subsequent season 1993/94, in which Everton just secured relegation . He scored six of the 16 goals in his two hat tricks against Sheffield United (4-2) and Swindon Town (6-2). Shortly after the start of the 1994/95 season, Cottee moved back to his ex-club West Ham United, with David Burrows going in the opposite direction at the same time .

Via Malaysia to Leicester (1994-2000)

With 23 league goals in the following two years, Cottee exceeded the 100-goal mark at West Ham. For more than a midfield place, however, it was not enough and shortly after the beginning of the 1996/97 season he left the club for the second time, now in the direction of Malaysia. The sporting adventure in the Far East lasted only a year and after winning the Malaysian FA Cup , it went back to Leicester City in the English Premier League in August 1997 .

The skeptical voices that rated the now 32-year-old striker as a "discontinued model" were initially confirmed. Cottee scored only four league goals in the 1997/98 season for the new club and after a loan deal with the second division club Birmingham City , a permanent move there became apparent. This did not materialize and after returning to Leicester, Cottee harmonized with the young Emile Heskey at the beginning of the 1998/99 season . A possible surprise victory in August 1998 at Manchester United after initial goals from Heskey and Cottee could only be prevented by an equalizer from David Beckham in stoppage time. Cottee scored double-digit again in the Premier League this and the following 1999/20 season. In addition, he was successful in an English cup final for the first time in February 2000. He won the League Cup with the "Foxes" via a 2-1 final win against Tranmere Rovers - the year before he had lost 1-0 in the final against Tottenham Hotspur in the same place .

Career finale (2000-2001)

In September 2000 Cottee turned his back on Leicester and by the end of the 2000/01 season he then let his career at Norwich City , Barnet FC (as a player-coach ) and Millwall FC end.

After retiring from active life, Cottee began working as a television expert for Sky Sports . He was also seen on Malaysian television as part of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and for coverage of the English Premier League. In 2019, Cottee suffered a brain haemorrhage from which he made a full recovery.

English national team

In addition to Gary Lineker , who was undisputed in the mid-1980s, in the center-forward position, the English coach Bobby Robson had to establish another goalscorer. After the 1986 World Cup in Mexico , when various national players were spared , Cottee received his first nomination in autumn. Against Sweden , Robson changed him in Stockholm for Trevor Steven and in the qualifying game against the Northern Irish national football team he made another brief appearance when the score was 3-0. Cottee could not use the rare opportunities for himself and also for the upcoming European Championship in 1988 in Germany he did not make it into the English squad . After a total of six substitutions, he was on May 27, 1989 in the Rous Cup for the first time in the starting line-up. There Cottee was unlucky in 75 minutes against Scotland and had to watch as third division striker and debutant Steve Bull scored an instant goal five minutes after being substituted . Bull later drove with England to the 1990 World Cup in Italy , while Cottee's international career ended with this appearance.
