Graeme Marshall Sharp (born October 16, 1960 in Glasgow ) is a former Scottish football player.

Player career

Dumbarton FC

Graeme Sharp started his professional career in 1978 with the Scottish second division club FC Dumbarton . After a sporadic first season in the Scottish Football League Second Division , he scored 16 goals in 34 league games in the 1979/80 season and was recommended for a move to Everton .

Everton FC

Everton signed the talented young Scottish striker in April 1980 for £ 120,000. Under coach Gordon Lee Sharp came in the Football League First Division 1980/81 only to four league appearances. At the beginning of the 1981/82 season , Howard Kendall took over the coaching post at Everton and initiated the most successful period in the club's history in his six-year tenure. Graeme Sharp (29 games / 15 goals) was quickly considered by Kendall and paid back with numerous goals. In the First Division, the team missed qualifying for the European Cup in the first three seasons, but Everton reached the final in the 1983/84 FA Cup and defeated Watford 2-0 there. Sharp had taken the lead in the 38th minute before Andy Gray scored the second goal in the 51st.

The following season 1984/85 should be the most successful in the club's history. Together with his teammates Neville Southall , Trevor Steven and Pat Van Den Hauwe , Sharp (36 games / 21 hits) won the championship in the Football League First Division in 1984/85 . The team secured another title in the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1984/85 when Everton beat Rapid Vienna 3-1 in the final in Rotterdam . In addition, the team reached the final of the FA Cup 1984/85 , but lost it 0-1 against Manchester United . Due to numerous misconduct by English hooligans, which culminated in the Heysel disaster , all English clubs were excluded from the European Cup from the 85/86 season. Everton therefore missed participation in the European Cup . But the club won after the runner-up in 85/86 behind Liverpool and another final defeat in the FA Cup 1985/86 , in the Football League First Division 1986/87 sovereign the championship title. In the 1988/89 FA Cup , Everton moved into the final again, but lost the final against Liverpool FC. Sharp had been able to build on the good previous season in the 85/86 season and scored 19 goals in 37 league games, but then only scored double-digit again in 87/88 in the First Division. Howard Kendall, who returned to Everton in November 1990 after more than three years, had Tony Cottee and Mike Newell , two impeccable strikers who were preferred to Sharp.

Oldham Athletic

In July 1991 he moved to Oldham Athletic for £ 500,000 after eleven successful years in Liverpool . Oldham had reached qualification for the Football League First Division 1991/92 after 68 years of absence last year and secured relegation with Sharp. Even the introduction of the Premier League in 1992/93 survived the club in the first division, before relegation to the second division took place in the Premier League in 1993/94 as a table penultimate. But the club celebrated a success by moving into the semi-finals of the FA Cup 1993/94 , where Oldham only had to admit defeat to the later title holder Manchester United in the replay . When Joe Royle left Oldham in November 1994 to become the new coach at Everton, Sharp took on a new role as player-coach. However , the club failed to return to the Premier League in the following years, rather the team rose to the third division in the 1996/97 season. Graeme Sharp had already left the club in March 1997.

He spent a season as a player-coach in the League of Wales 1997/98 at the Welsh first division side Bangor City and secured with his team the title in the 1998 Welsh Cup before he ended his career.

Scottish national team

Between 1985 and 1988 Graeme Sharp played 12 international matches for the Scottish national football team and scored one goal. The highlight of his national team career was participation in the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Scotland failed in the preliminary round to Germany, Uruguay and Denmark. Sharp was only used in the last group game in the 0-0 draw against Uruguay.
