Monument text
The Hellerau water tower on the north-western outskirts was built in 1927/28 by the local concrete construction company Renschka & Palitzsch GmbH based on a design by the Dresden architect Hans Richter . The builder was the waterworks of the municipality of Rähnitz-Hellerau , the construction management was held by the government master builder Gleitsmann. The 32 m high tower, with its reduced, cubist design language, is an important architectural testimony to the New Objectivity in Dresden. Particularly noteworthy is the design of the tower shaft made of in-situ concrete, made up of two crossing diagonals, the center of which contains the staircase and water pipes. Above the shaft, the spanned base area widens to form a reinforced concrete cube, which contains the cylindrical reinforced concrete water tank (capacity 300 m³) and a tubular chamber. The tower is completed by a very flat sloping roof with an eight-meter-high top. In the stairwell as well as in the lower part of the container floor, square windows, arranged effectively offset, are the only structure of the otherwise unadorned concrete facade. The tower has been out of service as an elevated water tank since the 1950s. Today it is primarily used as a carrier for cell phone antennas. Due to its unusual design, the Hellerau water tower is of architectural and artistic importance. Furthermore, it bears testimony to the development of the water supply in the municipality of Rähnitz-Hellerau, which was independent until 1950, and is therefore of technical and local historical importance (LfD / 2017).
