- ↑ The so-called “Chinese Pavilion”, made in Shanghai in 1910/11, based on designs by the Tsingtao (now Qingdao) architect Curt Rothkegel, was the official contribution of Imperial China to the International Hygiene Exhibition in Dresden. According to its content, it was a world exhibition that was in the context of the “life reform” movement, which originated in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and here also largely from Germany. Dresden played a major role in this development, and even pioneered individual projects. In addition to the aforementioned first international hygiene exhibition in 1911, which attracted international attention, it should also go to the garden city of Dresden-Hellerau, which also attracted international attention, or to the Lahmann sanatorium on the Weißen Hirsch in Dresden, which is known far beyond the borders of Germany "Holistic" medicine. The organizer of the "hygiene exhibition" pursued the ambitious goal of "presenting a comprehensive overall picture of the hygiene of all peoples and times" and "a complete world view of the hygiene of mankind." The term hygiene included nutrition, personal hygiene and clothing as well as physical exercises and understood the living conditions that make a healthy lifestyle possible. The participation of China and Japan as important cultural nations was felt to be an essential enrichment, especially against the background of the exhibition theme and the great tradition of both countries in this area. But also for the imperial Chinese government, which - prompted by Japan - was about to open up more to the West, participation in this exhibition, which evidently reflected the zeitgeist and at the same time pioneered the future, was an important concern. After the hygiene exhibition, which was incorporated in Dresden in 1922 and acquired by the aforementioned sanatorium Dr. Lahmann bought the imperial state pavilion for 8,500 Reichsmarks and moved it in 1912 to the “Rathausgarten” immediately adjacent to the spa complex as an urban finishing touch and highlight. The reconstruction was carried out under the direction of the architect Ferdinand Schaeffer, the execution was in the hands of the master builder Max Müller. From the summer of 1912, the exhibition hall was placed on a basement level adapted to the terrain and designed by Schaeffer as a reading café (including 50 domestic and foreign daily newspapers and 30 periodicals) and as a drinking hall with attached garden spaces for the health resort in front of the, which has established itself as an international address Gates of the Saxon residence city of Dresden. Today, the pavilion is the only remaining building from the first World Hygiene Exhibition and is therefore an important national and international witness to an important phase of the “life reform” movement in Germany at the beginning of the twentieth century. The pavilion, which was commissioned by the imperial family, is designed as a five-aisled, Chinese hall construction with access and covered by a hipped roof open to the interior (xieshan = resting mountain) with a rather rare rounded ridge. On the long side opposite the entrance front, a polygonal-cut building, closed by a helmet-like curved roof, enriches the overall concept of the rather small building. This results in a penetration of the two traditional building types of the oblong hall (tang) and the octagon or pavilion (ting) in an axially symmetrical shape. The characteristic post structure, tied in the traditional Chinese manner, was demonstrably manufactured in China (Shanghai), then dismantled again and brought to Dresden. In this respect, it is not a European interpretation of East Asian architecture, but an original Chinese building. It represents an essential link in the history of the reception of Chinese culture in Saxony and Germany - also taking into account its integration into today's urban planning context. Dresden, with its collections and large buildings from the eighteenth century, can be considered a special place of a European “China- Enthusiasm ”apply. The Imperial Chinese Pavilion in Dresden is the only preserved original Chinese architecture from the late imperial era in the Free State of Saxony and, as far as we know, also in the Federal Republic of Germany. In any case, this applies to independent buildings that are used, integrated into a landscape or urban structure - but with a high degree of probability also for museum exhibits of comparable dimensions.
