Detailed memorial texts

  1. Monument text
The former town hall of Cotta is located in the north of the Dresden district of the same name, on Lübecker Straße. Building inspector Bernhard Seitz (1864–1947), temporarily head of the local building department, was commissioned to plan a new town hall in 1898/99. In addition, the architect Felix Reinhold Voretzsch (1873–1951) played a decisive role in its design. The municipal council signed a fee contract with him in 1899 for the artistic support of the building inspector. In addition, Heino Otto (1869–1929) is said to have been involved in the new building. Construction began in November 1899. During a festive meeting on April 24, 1901, the town hall was handed over to its intended purpose. It appears as an elaborate building in the style of the German Neo-Renaissance with forms of the late Gothic and Art Nouveau . The three-storey, free-standing plastered building with sandstone structures over a rectangular floor plan is dominated by an integrated, high and square tower with a Welscher dome. The irregular main facade enliven the bay windows and the stepped gable. On the tower axis rises a rich arched portal with a large female bust as a crown stone, two gargoyles and two coat of arms-bearing lions above the cornice. Façade decorated with heraldic sculptures, extensively renovated in 2009.
The property of a monument arises on the one hand from the exemplary value for the construction of the town hall in the late 19th century and from the architectural and historical significance for the historicism that was still widespread around 1900. In summary, the building epoch of historicism is characterized by the imitation of past styles such as Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The 20th century heralds the Cotta town hall with the use of Art Nouveau elements. On the other hand, the building by Seitz and Voretzsch with its representative and elaborate design including numerous decorative details is also of artistic importance. It appeals to the aesthetic sensibility of a viewer in a special way. The public interest in conservation is also given here. Town halls like the one in Dresden-Cotta are accepted and valued as monuments by the population and experts (LfD / 2012).
  2. The building used today by the Young Generation Theater was built as a ballroom in 1895–1896 and served as emergency shelter for soldiers during World War II. In 1950 one of the first children's and youth theaters in the GDR was set up here. Extensive alterations were necessary for this. The stage and auditorium took the place of the hall. The doors to the auditorium and probably also the extension on the Elbe side with pilaster strips originate from this renovation phase as visible, recognizable elements. After a fire that mainly affected the stage area, further changes were made in 1976. Nevertheless, the exterior of the building was largely retained in the form of the late 19th century. This particularly applies to the front of the street. The outer walls and most of the distinctive roof structure also date from the time it was built. The external appearance with its design thus creates a significant and legible reference to the time when the former ballroom was built and thus justifies the public interest in the preservation of the complex, which is important in terms of architectural and local history.
