Detailed memorial texts

  1. Monument text
The complex, located on Conertplatz in Dresden, OT Löbtau, was built in the mid-1960s in memory of the communist journalist and politician Rudolf Renner (1894–1940) who lived in Löbtau at the time and who perished in Buchenwald concentration camp in 1940. The bust, created in 1964, was made by Helmut Schwager (born 1922), a student of Walter Arnold (1909–1979). Schwager was a lecturer in sculpture at the art college and is an honorary member of the Künstlerbund Dresden eV Renner, who was born in Beule, at that time a place near Wuppertal , took part in the First World War. After working as a reporter for the Volksblatt in 1924 and editing the Workers' Voice in 1925, Renner was elected to the Central Committee of the KPD in 1929 and became Political Secretary for Saxony. At the same time, he was a member of parliament from 1920, and later also chairman of the KPD parliamentary group in the Saxon state parliament. In 1932 he published the Sächsische Arbeiter-Zeitung in Leipzig. A short time after the National Socialists came to power, Renner was imprisoned and later sentenced to three years of forced labor, which he served in the Waldheim prison. After his internment in the Sachsenburg concentration camp in 1936 and his transfer to Buchenwald in 1937, he died there in 1940. A Löbtauer Straße with the same name reminds of Rudolf Renner next to the monument. With a city council resolution of 1995 it was decided that the monument will remain in its place. Renner is also remembered in the more recent specialist literature. The memorial commemorates a locally known victim of the National Socialist dictatorship who lived and worked here at the time and is therefore significant in terms of personal history. The bust created by Schwager, as a characteristic GDR image of “socialist realism”, is also of art historical value (LfD / 2017).
