  2. Mill and bread factory, Brothers Braune, König-Friedrich-August-Mühle, Dresden, Tharandter Straße, Flst.-Nr. 191/1. In 1844, the Neumühle, located in Plauen, passed into the possession of Gottfried Braune. In 1903 his sons combined this with the garrison mill, also known as the wheat mill. Since then, the company has been operating under the name König-Friedrich-August-Mühle, later as König-Friedrich-August-Mühlenwerke AG. In the immediate vicinity of the still-preserved bakery complex, Tharandter Strasse, Flst. 191/1 set up the first small factory. In 1876 they applied for the construction of a house, today's Tharandter Straße 117, district Dölzschen, district number 191/2 (no monument). As the sole owner of the company, in 1889, the Braunes initiated the construction of the western part of the still-preserved bakery complex, presumably by the certified master builder Hermann Blauert. As early as 1899–1900, an annex built by master builder Ferdinand Fichtner from Dresden-Plauen, almost identically designed, was added. Up until the First World War, there was constant construction and expansion, including a boiler house and a machine house by the architects and master builders, the Heinrich brothers, who can probably be regarded as company architects. Even after the outbreak of the war, the Braune brothers continued to build, for example because of a ban on baking at night. The most serious change, however, took place from 1918 onwards, when the most sophisticated part with a staircase tower and a larger hall building was built at the eastern end of the bakery complex. The design for it comes from building officer Hermann Viehweger, a well-known Dresden architect from around 1900, and his colleague Max Grosse. The builder Richard Fülle and Wayss & Freitag AG were involved in the construction of the new bakery section. The Wayss & Freitag company played a key role in the development of iron and reinforced concrete construction after 1900 by acquiring the patents from Joseph Monier. It also gave the development of building technology fundamental impulses through its own innovations. The design and execution of the reinforced concrete structure of the staircase tower and hall building, including the remarkable and in its shape rare loft above the latter, were in the hands of the company mentioned. In the course of this recent expansion, the extension was also changed from 1899–1900. Analogous to the modern hall building to the east, it also received a hall that extended over two floors and thus large elongated windows. Although the construction of the hall building and the staircase tower was already underway in 1918, it was not examined and approved by the administrative authorities until 1919–1920. Until then, there were only visits with the construction adviser of the Dölzschen municipal council. The construction of the silo at the wheat mill in 1918 by the well-known Seck mill construction company from Dresden was also relevant to the history of König-Friedrich-August-Mühlenwerke AG. The mill and silo tower were registered as cultural monuments in the early 1990s. The bakery complex described here also fulfills the required criteria for monument status. As a bread factory / bakery owned by the Braune brothers, it was one of the most important companies of its kind in and around Dresden. The annex built between 1918 and 1919 with a towering staircase tower and modern hall is also remarkable as an industrial architecture. It is not only associated with the name of a well-known Dresden architect, but also with the name of a company that was among the innovators in the field of iron and reinforced concrete construction after 1900, mainly due to the construction of the hall and the roof above it becomes clear. The roof structure, with its expressionist design language, with its reinforced concrete frame trusses tapering elegantly upwards and downwards, is reminiscent of the interior of the hat factory in Luckenwalde, a leading building of German industrial architecture, created by Erich Mendelsohn in 1921-1923. The property to be assessed here is therefore significant in terms of location and building history.
