history

Chapel of the Dölzschen cemetery

Dölzschen originally belonged to Dresden. Baptisms took place in the Kreuzkirche , weddings in the Frauenkirche and funeral ceremonies in the Annenkirche , with the citizens of Dölzschen being buried in the Annenfriedhöfe . There was never a church in Dölzschen. In 1878 Dölzschen Pesterwitz and Plauen were assigned, which had their own cemeteries.

In 1920 the municipality of Dölzschen acquired around 0.81 hectares of land in Dölzschen from the factory owner Arno Reichelt from Loschwitz. The cemetery was laid out from 1922 to 1923, with Wilhelm Stein responsible for the garden design. The cemetery was owned by the Dölzschen community. After Dölzschen was incorporated into Dresden in 1945, the cemetery was taken over by the municipal cemetery office. To this day, the cemetery is one of the four municipal cemeteries in the city of Dresden, along with the Heidefriedhof , the Nordfriedhof and the Tolkewitz urn grove . It is also the smallest municipal cemetery in the city.

When the first burial took place in the Dölzschen cemetery in 1923, he did not yet have a mourning or celebration hall. It was not created until 1927 due to a lack of money. The design comes from the architect Reinhardt, the construction work was in the hands of the master builder Max Seiffert from Coschütz. The celebration hall was inaugurated on September 9, 1928. After the end of the Second World War , the building was only used regularly for a few years. In addition to funerals, festivities for Christmas and Thanksgiving took place here. The building subsequently fell into disrepair, so that ultimately only an adjoining room could be used for funeral services.

From 2000 onwards, citizens of Dölzschen, who founded the Freundeskreis Dölzschener Friedhof eV in 2002, campaigned for the renovation of the cemetery chapel and collected the first funds with exhibitions and benefit concerts. The renovation of the chapel, which cost 190,000 euros and was largely financed by the city of Dresden, took place from 2004 to September 2006. Among other things, the roof was re-covered, the chapel tower renovated and the building, which was repeatedly uneventful due to the hillside location damming water became moist, drained. A weathered figure above the entrance to the chapel could also be reconstructed. When it reopened in 2006, the celebration hall also received an electronic organ, which was financed from donations. The chapel is now used for funeral services, concerts and exhibitions, among other things. Since 2011 the association has been committed to the construction of a separate belfry with a bell on the cemetery grounds, as the roof turret of the chapel is too small for a bell.
