Carl Ludwig Scheins (born September 14, 1808 in Aachen , † October 23, 1879 in Düsseldorf ) was a German landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Live and act

Carl Ludwig Scheins, who grew up in Aachen, moved to Düsseldorf as a young man, where he studied painting at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1830 to 1837 he specialized in landscape painting and attended Johann Wilhelm Schirmer's master class . He belongs to the circle of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , as mentioned in 1836 by the archivist and writer Johann Josef Scotti , and later by Wolfgang Müller von Königswinter in his Düsseldorf artist album. The Aachen Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum , where some selected exhibits from this painting school (in addition to the paintings by Scheins, among others, works by Schirmer, Oswald and Andreas Achenbach and Caspar Scheuren ) are assigned to this artistic milieu.

In 1840, Carl Ludwig Scheins was awarded the Medal of Merit for Foreign Artists as part of the art exhibition in Antwerp .

In his landscape pictures it becomes clear that Scheins dealt meticulously with the design and seasonal appearance of nature. In particular, his representations of trees of all kinds are characterized by an exact, almost anatomical shape. The representation of individual buildings, churchyards, ruins and other structures standing in the landscape show a high degree of architectural subtlety in Scheins. His landscape pictures are supplemented with people and animals, which, as if by chance, were doing their specific activity at the time the picture was created and thereby animate the picture without being significantly in the foreground. Nevertheless, many of his works, especially the winter landscapes, exude a certain melancholy in their overall impression due to the skillful use of different lighting components , as Wolfgang Müller describes.
