Caspar Johann Nepomuk Scheuren (born August 22, 1810 in Aachen , † June 12, 1887 in Düsseldorf ) was a German painter and illustrator .

Life

After training in the studio of his father Aegidius Johann Peter Joseph Scheuren , he trained as a landscape painter from 1829 to 1835 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Study trips were important for his "romantic and fantastic artistry", the role models of Carl Friedrich Lessing and Johann Wilhelm Schirmer as well as the reading of Walter Scott .

Caspar Scheuren is a representative of the Düsseldorf School of Painting and is considered to be one of the most important Rhineland painters of the 19th century. The painter Theodor Groll was a private student of Scheuren .

Most of his pictures deal with legends, stories and motifs from famous areas of the Rhine ( Rhine romanticism ). As early as the end of the 1830s he gave up landscape painting in oil and created a new genre of allegorically decorated, finely drawn and gracefully colored views, illustrations , dedication and commemorative sheets in which landscape, figures and ornamentation are combined in an imaginative way. These works have been reproduced many times.

From 1839 he lived in Düsseldorf and was appointed professor at the academy in 1855. The Aachen History Association placed a memorial plaque on the house where he was born in Aachen in 1890.

His work is currently valued at around 300 paintings, more than 400 prints and over 600 watercolors. Scheuren had a preference for Rhenish topics. His album dedicated to Schloss Stolzenfels was digitized by the Rheinische Landesbibliothek in Koblenz . There are also works by Scheuren in the Nationalgalerie (Berlin) , the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum , Cologne.

Caspar Scheuren is buried in the Düsseldorf North Cemetery.
