Theodor Groll

Theodor Groll , also Theodor Groll the Younger (born February 9, 1857 in Düsseldorf ; † April 2, 1913 ibid), was a German genre , landscape and architecture painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Groll was born as the son of the Düsseldorf glove maker and writer Theodor Groll (* 1831). In 1878 he finished his education at the municipal high school in Düsseldorf . He then attended the Berlin Building Academy , where he passed the government master builder exam. Then he changed the subject and became a private student with the Düsseldorf landscape and vedute painter Caspar Scheuren . Groll went on numerous study trips, several to Italy. In April 1890 he visited Rome . From 1892 he stayed in the United States for several years . In 1893 he was a judge at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago . In 1896 he traveled to southern and central German cities. In 1904 Groll founded together with the painters Hans Deiker , Carl Haver , Carl Jutz the Elder. J. , Gustav Rutz , Emil Schultz-Riga and others formed the November group in Düsseldorf . Groll was a member of the Düsseldorf Artists 'Association and the Malkasten Artists' Association , which he served as chairman for several years. Theodor Groll died on the night of April 3, 1913.

Groll made a special name for himself with his fine, detailed architectural painting. Along with Oswald Achenbach , Albert Flamm and others, he is one of the “Italian painters” at the Düsseldorf School. At an international art auction in 2013, Groll's Afternoon in Venice was auctioned for 58,750 euros.
