Association of Düsseldorf Artists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Association of Düsseldorf Artists , abbreviation VdDK , founded in 1844 as the Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help , is one of the oldest artist organizations in Germany alongside the Association of Berlin Artists , the Dresden Art Cooperative , the former Hamburg Artists Association from 1832 and the Munich Artists Support Association . For over 170 years, the VdDK has been committed to the Düsseldorf artists and the city of Düsseldorf . The club is located in the Künstlerhaus Sittarder Straße 5 , the oldest still existing studio in the city.

history

The "Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help", founded in 1844 by members of the Düsseldorf School of Painting , was a supra-regional loan and insurance association for artists in Düsseldorf. The association set up aid funds for needy artists and their survivors, which often became the most important source of income for those affected, and this long before there was a statutory pension insurance. The result was a forerunner of today's artists ' social security fund organized by artists .

The early founding members of the association included Wilhelm von Schadow , Wilhelm Camphausen , Alfred Rethel , Oswald Achenbach , Adolph von Menzel , Hermann Becker , Johann Wilhelm Preyer , Siegmund Lachenwitz , August Weber and over 150 other artists. In the first years of the association, the association members took over the guarding of the annual exhibition of the art association for the Rhineland and Westphalia , because another objective of the VdDK was to promote the professional interests of the artists by setting up a permanent exhibition and thus secure their sources of income.

On June 21, 1851 in Sanssouci, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia presented the union with the “ corporation rights ” through a royal cabinet order and in 1886 the VdDK was recognized as a “mild foundation”. In the statutes of 1909 it was stated: "The purpose of the association is to safeguard and enhance the intellectual and legal interests of its members, as well as to represent and maintain its rights in the exhibition sector."

Kunsthalle, built from 1878 to 1881 by Ernst Giese and Paul Weidner (1843–1899)

With the help of grants from the German Emperor Wilhelm I , the VdDK succeeded in persuading the city of Düsseldorf to build an art gallery. In 1881, 37 years after the association was founded, the art gallery on Grabbeplatz was opened . In the following 25 years the Kunsthalle organized 250 exhibitions with participants from all parts of the German Empire and other European countries. Most of the visual artists in Düsseldorf had joined the association. Karl Bone wrote in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area on " Artists : (painters, sculptors, engravers, etc., who belong to the" Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help "and the general German art cooperative .) The address book for Düsseldorf in 1890 contains more than 300 Painters , 8 engravers , 2 xylographers and 24 sculptors . A number of well-known names follow [...] "

Art Palace 1902

In 1900 the members of the "Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help" also founded the Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions e. V. (VzVvK) , who resided in the Malkasten House . He built the exhibition palace with his own resources and by issuing share certificates on the banks of the Rhine south of Golzheimer Insel . It was opened in 1902 for the Düsseldorf industrial and commercial exhibition based on plans by Albrecht Bender and Eugen Rückgauer . In 1905 all subscribers got their money back from the profits of the exhibitions held up to that point. By resolutions of the city council of Düsseldorf in 1899 and 1917, the VzVvK was granted the privilege of holding art exhibitions in this building at any time. Other users would have to refrain from this privilege.

The VdDK also looked after its decrepit artists. For example , after his death in 1925, a retirement home, the Eduard von Gebhardt-Heim, was set up in Eduard Gebhardt's house on Rosenstrasse 41.

To promote the working conditions of the Düsseldorf artists, the artist and studio house Sittarder Straße 5 was built by the architect Josef Kleesattel in 1907/1908 with a foundation of the "Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Assistance" in the amount of 180,000 gold marks . It is located between the southern part of the Golzheimer Friedhof and Fischerstrasse in Pempelfort . The cemetery, which is directly adjacent to the Künstlerhaus, was closed in 1897/1898 and is now a public green area under monument protection. In the “artist's studio house”, as it is written above the portal , a number of studios and workshops have been available for professional artists for a small rent.

“The object of the company is to promote Düsseldorf's visual arts community, taking into account proven aging artists, by awarding studios at rental prices that are below the local rental level. In this way, German art production is directly served in a non-profit manner through the person of the artist. "

- Düsseldorfer Künstleratelier GmbH

The oldest atelier in Düsseldorf belongs to the “Düsseldorfer Künstleratelier GmbH” with over 50% participation of the “Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help”, individual shareholders and a proportion of the city of Düsseldorf. As a shareholder, the VdDK has had its seat in the studio house since the beginning and offers the opportunity for exhibitions and events in the SITTart gallery . In front of the studio building on the right is the sculpture "Two times four" by Hagen Hilderhof .

After the Second World War , the activities of the VdDK were revived in 1947 thanks to the committed work of the painters Bernhard Gauer and Lorenz Bösken , the architect Carl Krieger (1870 / 1880–1957) and the manager Udo Stobbe, and the old objectives were pushed forward again. From 1948 to 1970, the VdDK initially organized its “Christmas Exhibition” in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf , and later the successful “Winter Exhibition of the Visual Artists of Rhineland and Westphalia” in the Kunstpalast Ehrenhof . In the 1970s and 1980s, the activities of the VdDK and the VzVvK were brought together and jointly organized under the chairmanship of the painter Hans-Günther Cremers (1928–2004). For over 170 years, well-known representatives of the arts have held the post of chairman, such as Friedrich Heunert , Johann Peter Hasenclever , Ernst Bosch , Emil Gottlieb Schuback , Carl Wilhelm Hübner , Kurt Sandweg and Edmund Anton Kohlschein , to name a few.

The artists' association , which is increasingly committed to cultural-political tasks and topics in Düsseldorf, maintains three of 325 studios in the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris , the "Atelier Max Ernst", the "Atelier Max Beckmann" and the "Atelier von Schadow", and awards the van-Rinsum scholarship annually to graduates of the Düsseldorf Art Academy for a two-month work stay .

A full membership is open to all professionally working artists who work in Dusseldorf or have a special relationship to Dusseldorf. The prerequisite for admission to the Association of Düsseldorf Artists is that you also apply for membership in the Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions . In this close connection, Die GROSSE is held every year in the Museum Kunstpalast , where the artist's art prize has been awarded since 1975 .

Michael Kortländer , chairman of the Association for the Organization of Art Exhibitions e. V. , has been chairman of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Aid (VdKD) since 2014 and is on the board of the Malkasten artists' association .
