Hilderhof was born in Heidelberg in 1937 as the eldest son of a mathematics teacher. The brothers Harald and Kurt followed. Hagen Hilderhof went to school in Wertheim . After graduating from school, he did an internship with two architects in Würzburg and Düsseldorf from 1955 to 1958 .

He has been working as a freelance artist since 1959. At the age of 16 he had already created his first sculptures out of clay mixed with cement . Hagen Hilderhof sees his work as part of concrete art . He started by swapping angle strips, taking into account their allocation in space. In doing so he relies on the aesthetics of mathematically calculable forms as an objectified form of expression. He describes his work as follows: “In my work, I rely on the aesthetics of mathematically calculable forms as an objectified form of expression. My aim is to find a self-organizing structure, which I help to determine by adding and trimming. ”(Hagen Hilderhof, Skulpturen 2007, p. 8).

Hilderhof has been a long-time member of the Düsseldorf and Darmstadt Secession . In both secessions he temporarily held functions on the board. He is also a member of the Association of Düsseldorf Artists . His sculpture “Two times four” stands in front of the artist's studio house at 5 Sittarder Strasse.

From 1981 to 1992 he held a teaching position for the subject of design at the University of Wuppertal . In 1993, on the initiative of his artist friend Hans Sieverding (* 1937), he took up his main residence in Schloss Fürstenau (Michelstadt) in the Odenwald. There he managed to combine life and artistic creation under one roof.

Works

The focus of the work is on large-format metal sculptures. Different rhombohedra are very often used here. He uses wood, aluminum and, in the last few decades, mainly Corten steel as materials . The Corten steel figure hammerwheel, composed of rhombohedra , has been on the Lichtwiese campus of the Technical University in Darmstadt since 2017 .
