Santiago Arias Naranjo (born January 13, 1992 in Medellín ) is a Colombian football player who is under contract with the Spanish club Atlético Madrid .

Career

society

Santiago Arias was born in Medellín , but spent his youth in the capital, Bogotá , where he learned to play football at La Equidad . Already at the age of 17 he was used in the first team and in 2009 he already played 14 games in the Categoría Primera A , the highest league in Colombia. Although he could not play in the professional team in the following two years, talent scouts from Sporting Lisbon had noticed him through his performance as a junior national player and made him an offer in 2011.

In the summer of the year Arias moved to Portugal, but only made six appearances in the Primeira Liga in his first season . The breakthrough did not come in the 2012/13 season, instead he was a regular in the B-team in the Segunda League . Therefore, he left the club after two years and joined PSV Eindhoven . With the Dutch, the right defender became a regular straight away. In his first year he played almost completely from the 13th matchday after initial adjustment problems. He made 25 appearances in the Eredivisie and scored his first first division goal on matchday 23 with a 1-0 lead against Twente Enschede .

National team

Santiago Arias already played in the U17 and U20 national jerseys and also took part in the respective Junior World Championships with both teams. His good performances helped him to an international club career. In 2013 he was called up to the Colombian senior national team for the first time and made his debut in the last qualifying game for the 2014 World Cup on October 15, 2013 in Paraguay . From then on he was a permanent national player and also played in the five World Cup preparatory games. Eventually he was included in Colombia's 23-man World Cup squad. In Brazil he played in all three games of the group stage, with the first two games coming on in the final quarter of an hour and in the third game, when the knockout round qualification was already established, he was on the field for the full season.

He was part of the Colombian squad at the 2018 World Cup in Brazil . He completed all four games and was eliminated with the team in the round of 16 against England on penalties.
