José María Giménez , full name José María Giménez de Vargas , (born January 20, 1995 in Toledo ) is a Uruguayan football player .

Career

The 1.85 meter tall defensive player Giménez, who occupies the position of a central defender, began his career with Danubio in the Tercera División. He made his debut under coach Juan Ramón Carrasco in the Primera División in the game against Central Español on matchday 11 of Apertura 2012. For Danubio, he completed 16 first division games in the 2012/13 season. In April 2013 he signed a five-year contract with Atlético Madrid . In the Spanish Primera División he came for the first time on September 14, 2013 in the 4-2 win against UD Almería and was part of the starting line-up. He formed the central defense with his compatriot Diego Godín . He had made his international debut just four days earlier. He did not come to another compulsory club game for Atlético in his premiere season 2013/14 . In his first season with the Madrilenians, he won the national championship with the team.

In the 2014/15 season, which his club finished third in the table, he was used 20 times (one goal) in the top Spanish league and four times (no goal) in the Champions League . In the 2015/16 season he played 27 times (one goal) in the Primera División and eight times (no goal) in the Champions League. During the 2016/17 season he played 17 La Liga games (no goal) and six games (no goal) in the Champions League.

Giménez at the 2018 World Cup

Giménez made his debut in the Uruguayan U-20 team on April 10, 2013 under coach Juan Verzeri in the 2-1 defeat against Chile. A few months later he took part with Uruguay in the U-20 World Cup in 2013 and finished the tournament in second place. During the tournament he was used in seven games. In total, he has completed ten internationals for this selection so far (as of July 5, 2013). He did not succeed in scoring.

Giménez made his debut on September 10, 2013 with a starting eleven in the 2-0 World Cup qualifier against Colombia in the senior team of Uruguay . In the subsequent World Cup qualifying match against Ecuador on October 11, 2013, he was again in the starting line-up. At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was the youngest player in the squad to join the Uruguayan squad and played three of the Uruguayans' four tournament games. He scored his first international goal on September 8, 2014 in a 1-0 away win in the international friendly against South Korea. For the Copa América 2015 in Chile , he was called back to the Uruguayan team. There he was eliminated with the Celeste in the quarterfinals.

With Uruguay he will take part in the 2018 World Cup. In the first group game against Egypt , he scored the decisive 1-0 in the 90th minute.

On December 13, 2014, Giménez announced that that day he had a son. At the age of 17, when his then 14-year-old sister became pregnant, he wanted to quit football and look for a job to support his family financially and to look after the child. Representatives of his club at the time were able to convince him to continue with football, in the same year he was signed by Atlético Madrid.
