Mikhail Alexeyevich Yegorov
Mikhail Alexejewitsch Jegorow ( Russian Михаил Алексеевич Егоров , born May 5, 1923 in Yermoshenki in what is now Smolensk Oblast , Soviet Union ; † June 20, 1975 in Smolensk ) was a sergeant of the Red Army .
According to official Soviet historiography, he was one of the three soldiers who hoisted the Soviet victory flag on the Berlin Reichstag building on April 30, 1945 . All three were decorated as " Heroes of the Soviet Union " with several medals and received a lifelong pension in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the fight against fascism.
On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the capitulation of the Wehrmacht Yegorov was on May 8, 1965 in East Berlin for an honorary citizen appointed. The honorary citizenship was revoked after the reunification of the city on September 29, 1992.
