Šime Vrsaljko [ ˈʃiːmɛ̂ ˈvrːsaːʎkɔ ] (born January 10, 1992 in Zadar ) is a Croatian football player who is under contract with Atlético Madrid .

Career

Vrsaljko started playing football in Dinamo Zagreb's youth . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season he was loaned to NK Lokomotiva Zagreb , Dinamo Zagreb's training team. On July 26, 2009 he made his debut there at the age of 16 in the 1st HNL , the highest Croatian league. As a result, he was used in all league games in the first half of the season. During the winter break of the same season he returned to Dinamo Zagreb and played there in another ten games. Vrsaljko played his first game for Dinamo on February 27, 2010 against NK Croatia Sesvete . At the end of the season he and his team won the Croatian championship and with a 1-0 final win against cup winner Hajduk Split , the Croatian Supercup .

Vrsaljko had his first international appearance on August 4, 2010 in the 3rd round of qualifying for the Champions League against Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova , who was lost on penalties. In the following play-off games for the qualification for the Europa League against the Hungarian club Győri ETO FC and in five games of the subsequent group stage, he was also used. Also this season he played regularly in the league. On August 29, 2010 Vrsaljko scored his first goal in professional football in the 2-0 win over Cibalia Vinkovci . In 2010 Vrsaljko was honored with the Hope of the Year award as the best young player in the league. At the end of the season Dinamo was able to win the championship again and secured the double with two clear victories over NK Varaždin in the final of the Croatian Cup . This success was repeated in 2012.

In the summer of 2013 Vrsaljko moved to the Italian first division club CFC Genua . His contract ran until 2017. In 2014 he left Genoa and moved to US Sassuolo Calcio .

For the 2016/17 season he was signed by the Spanish first division club Atlético Madrid for five years. In his first season he made 14 league appearances under Diego Simeone (11 times in the starting XI). In the 2017/18 season , 21 missions followed (19 times from the start).

For the 2018/19 season, Vrsaljko moved to Inter Milan on loan . He played 10 league games (8 times from the start). At the end of January 2019, Vrsaljko suffered a serious knee injury, which is why he was out until the end of the season.

The injured Vrsaljko returned to Atlético Madrid for the 2019/20 season.

National team

Vrsaljko went through numerous Croatian junior national teams. In 2010 he took part in the U-19 European Championship . During the tournament he was used four times, including in the semi-finals against the hosts and eventual European champions France, which were lost 2-1. For the U-21 national team he has played five games so far, for the first time on March 2, 2010 against France .

On November 2, 2010 he was for the first time in the squad of the Croatian national team for the European Championship qualifier against Malta . Vrsaljko played his first international match on February 9, 2011 against the Czech Republic . He was appointed to the squad for the 2012 European Championship by national coach Slaven Bilić . Vrsaljko was also nominated for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He was used in two of three games.

At the 2016 European Championships in France, Vrsaljko was included in the Croatian squad . In the second game against the Czech Republic he was used for the first time when he was substituted on in the final minutes. In the third group game against defending champions Spain he was allowed to play for the full 90 minutes. In the round of 16 against Portugal, which the team lost, he stayed on the bench again.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, Vrsaljko and his team made it to the final, in which they lost to France 4-2. Vrsaljko was part of the first line-up at the World Cup.
