Friedrich Siegmund Lachenwitz (born December 24, 1820 in Neuss ; † June 25, 1868 in Düsseldorf ) was a German animal painter from the Düsseldorf School and a photographer .

Life

On Christmas Eve 1820 Lachenwitz was born in Neuss as the son of District Secretary Johann Friedrich Ludwig Lachenwitz and Catharina Carolina Hackländer, a relative of the writer Friedrich Wilhelm Hackländer . From 1840 to 1847 he attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Although Lachenwitz took the landscape class of Johann Wilhelm Schirmer there , his artistic interest was animal painting . From 1844 Lachenwitz was a member of the Düsseldorf Artists' Association for mutual support and help . In 1848 he was one of the founding members of the Malkasten artists' association, alongside his brother-in-law Johann Wilhelm Preyer , who had married his sister Emilie . In 1850 Lachenwitz supported the initiative of his friend Johann Peter Hasenclever to include the writer Ferdinand Freiligrath in the artists' association. Lachenwitz lived in Düsseldorf until his death, where he - temporarily handicapped while painting and drawing due to an eye disease - from the beginning of the 1850s also wrote exhibition reviews for the daily press, small humorous stories as well as travel, hunting and animal stories that he wrote with his own Illustrations furnished. He also gave private lessons in painting and drawing, for example for the young Johann Peter Theodor Janssen . He was also active in the field of photography . In 1866 he took over the studio of the photography pioneer Johann Franz Michiels (1823–1887). Lachenwitz 'son Karl also became a photographer.

Siegmund Lachenwitz was portrayed by Hasenclever and captured in a friendship picture by Paul von Franken . The photographer Wilhelm Severin (1809–1888) also took a portrait photo showing Lachenwitz and his friend, painter Peter Schwingen .
