life and work

Competition design for Dresden Central Station, 1892
The Schönheide town hall was built in the neo-renaissance style in 1882 .

Weidner studied architecture with Hermann Nicolai at the construction studio of the Dresden Art Academy . As Semper Nicolai School this educational institution continued its adepts in particular to the historicism of Neo-Renaissance approach. In 1863 he received a certificate of honor, in 1866 the Small Gold Medal of the Art Academy, in 1867 a travel grant for two years. Based in Dresden, Weidner made a trip to Italy in 1870 .

In 1874 he joined forces with Ernst Giese to form the Giese & Weidner architectural office , which existed until 1892. In 1875 they won the architectural competition for the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf . Further competition successes and orders followed. The competition design for the Reichstag building in Berlin , which was awarded a 3rd prize in 1882, was particularly prestigious . In 1882 the new town hall in Schönheide in the Ore Mountains was realized, a building in the neo-renaissance style . In 1883 they were commissioned to build the Martin Luther Church in Dresden . In 1892 her competition design for Dresden Central Station was awarded one of two first prizes and was designated for execution. After separating from his partner Giese shortly afterwards, whose architectural office was henceforth called Giese & Sohn , Weidner was busy building the main train station, but was otherwise unable to build on previous successes. He last carried the title of a (royal Saxon) building officer - since Weidner's activity as a state building official cannot be proven, it seems to be an honorary title .
