Wilhelm "Olof" Herberholz (born February 1, 1881 in Schwerte , † February 10, 1956 in Oberstdorf ) was a German painter and graphic artist .

Life

Wilhelm Herberholz mainly created landscapes and portraits. Born in Schwerte, he studied teaching at the Kassel Art Academy and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . In Düsseldorf he was a member of the artists' association Malkasten and, as a member of the association of Düsseldorf artists , Herberholz received a studio around 1909 in the " artist and studio house " at Sittarder Strasse 5, where he was registered in 1912 as a master student.

His pictures were shown in 1910 and 1914 at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition , in 1911 in Düsseldorf, in 1914 at the exhibition of the Academic Association "Laetitia" in the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf and in 1921 in the annual exhibition of the artists' association "Niederrhein" in Düsseldorf.

In 1914 Herberholz moved into a house at Markt 64 in Kaiserswerth , where Arthur Kaufmann initially stayed. He was a war volunteer in the 2nd Westphalian Hussar Regiment No. 11 and in Kaiserswerth was the "2nd. Replacement Battalion Infantry Regiment No. 53 ”. At the beginning of 1920, Herberholz married Helene Erbes, the daughter of Robert and Sophie Erbes, née Wagner, from Neuwied, who painted and made pottery herself and moved into the Erbes family's house at Gartenstrasse 44.

In the mid-1920s, Wilhelm Herberholz took over the chair for free graphics and painting technology at the Düsseldorf Art Academy as well as the workshop management for materials science .

From 1938 Wilhelm Herberholz fell victim to the Nazi wave of purges . The Stapo Düsseldorf interned him for a long time .

In 1944 a work by Herberholz was shown at the Great German Art Exhibition in the House of German Art in Munich; as an artist, he was also listed in the corresponding annual main catalog.

Together with Ewald Mataré and Otto Pankok , Wilhelm Herberholz was recalled as professor at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1945.
