Herbert Zangs (born March 27, 1924 in Krefeld ; † March 26, 2003 there ) was a German painter .

Life

From 1941 to 1945 Zangs did military service in the Air Force and took part in the Second World War in Scandinavia , where he was eventually taken prisoner of war.

In the years 1945–1950, Zangs studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Otto Pankok and Wilhelm Herberholz are his most important academic teachers . Together with Günter Grass , whom he met during his studies, he was a doorman at the Csikós bar in Düsseldorf's old town. Grass was very interested in Zangs' war experiences and mentioned him in the role of the painter Lankes in his novel The Tin Drum . At the academy, Zangs also met Joseph Beuys , who, like him, had been in the Air Force in World War II and who also came from the Lower Rhine region. Later (in May 1975) Beuys once wrote about Zangs: "He provided a whole series of counter-images that gave a lot of orientation."

From 1950 he toured Europe and North Africa, initially mostly by hitchhiking. This was followed by trips to Russia, Japan, the USA and Canada as well as Australia and New Zealand. Numerous figurative "travel pictures" were created. Until his death, Zangs painted - parallel to his abstract works - in an expressionist-figurative manner.

Zangs had his first studio from 1951 in the Künstlerhaus on Sittarder Straße. From 1952 onwards he created his welds , found pieces ( objects ) or object collages covered with a light veil of white paint . In addition, important groups of works such as folds , knots, arithmetic symbols (plus-minus) and, from 1953, relief images were created. In 1956, the Zimmergalerie Franck showed a white work from 1954 in the Frankfurt Spring Salon for the first time. Many of these early works stored during his travels in Krefeld were destroyed or lost without being accessible to a wide audience. The confusion became known only later through the Krefeld collector and artist Adolf Luther , with whom Zangs was close friends and to whom he gave many works. From 1957 he created series of pictures in which the paint was applied with windshield wipers and which already anticipated the serial art movements of the 1960s.

In 1960 Zangs received the Vincent van Volkmer Art Prize and used the prize money to buy a house in Cucuron , France (Provence). He spent many days there, including with the actor Alexander May and his family.

In 1965 Zangs moved to Paris, interrupted by a stay in New York and Canada 1968–69. 1969–78 he traveled to Japan, India, the South Seas, Australia and Africa. From 1970 onwards there were again welds.

In 1973, Zangs was expelled from France because of a fight with two police officers. He returned to Germany, where he lived in Krefeld, Düsseldorf-Kaiserswerth and Xanten, among others. From 1975 he created anti-books and was with them at Documenta 6 in Kassel in 1977 - part of it is now in the collection of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, Berlin. From 1978 he created overpainting posters, whip pictures, computer pictures, from 1979 blister and bump pictures, from 1982 brush developments, from 1983 cloth pictures, from 1986 crease and burr pictures, from 1993 wheelchair pictures (due to the progressive illness).

On March 26, 2003, Zangs died, meanwhile both legs amputated, in a nursing home in Krefeld.

estate

In the book Seeing in White - Stations of My Life (1996) based on tape recordings, Zangs reports on his life and encounters with well-known contemporaries. The Herbert Zangs archive in Paris documents and processes the life and work of the artist. The catalog of works has been published by Emmy de Martelaere in continuous volumes since 2004. The estate and the copyright have been owned by the Maulberger Gallery since 2011.
