Adolf Luther (born April 25, 1912 in Uerdingen ; † September 20, 1990 in Krefeld ) was a German lawyer , artist and sculptor . He was a major exponent of kinetic art and optical art.

Life

Luther studied law at the University of Bonn from 1938 and was awarded a Dr. jur. PhD . As early as 1942 he devoted himself to painting, in favor of which he gave up his profession as a judge in 1957 .

His first works shone with a monochrome expressiveness. Since 1958 he has been working on the influences of light in its energetic-optical properties. He created an exciting immateriality through the refraction of light and reflective effects . He became known for his room with focussing light in smoke that he created in 1967. He also worked with laser beams since the early 1970s . He is present in public primarily through his concave mirror objects, which are closely linked as "integrations" with the surrounding, mostly public spaces. The integrations for the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, in the former Chancellery in Bonn in 1975/76, in the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf in 1976-78 or in the Bundestag building at the old waterworks in Bonn in 1982 should be mentioned, for example .

Luther showed his work in numerous exhibitions, in particular in solo exhibitions in the Drian Gallery in London (1960), in the Städtische Kunsthalle Düsseldorf (1974), in the Kunsthalle Bremen (1987), in the Museum Haus Esters (1990) and in the Museum Morsbroich in Leverkusen (1991). He was a member of the German Association of Artists .

Luther was awarded the title of professor by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in 1979. In 1989 the Adolf Luther Foundation was established, which was appointed as the administrator of the estate of Adolf Luther's artistic work. In 1989 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 1990 the artist was given honorary citizenship of the city of Krefeld.
