Richard Schreiber first studied art history in Bonn. In Düsseldorf he became a student of Karli Sohn-Rethel , expanded his knowledge of painting techniques , followed him to Positano around 1922/23 and went to 1925 with the painter and poet Valentin Talaga (1894–1941), called Tino, and son-Rethel North Africa to Tripoli .

Attracted by the movement within the French avant-garde, the Henri Matisse school and modern art , Schreiber, also known as Mucki by his friends, studied in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under Othon Friesz and at the Académie of André Lhote . He worked in Paris until 1933 and had a studio in Meudon with his friend Talaga . Richard Schreiber was a painter of expressive landscapes, still lifes and portraits. He was also known for his woodblock prints. He was represented at exhibitions in the Young Rhineland and was sponsored by the art dealer Alfred Flechtheim .

In the Third Reich , before and during the war, military topics were popular in the Great German Art Exhibitions and became more and more important. Realistic representations were not required as they interfered with the so-called “ healthy public feeling ”. Effective depictions of war that were directly related to current affairs were presented satisfactorily in paintings and studies by the marine painters Adolf Bock and Claus Bergen . Richard Schreiber, as a member of the Reich Chamber of Fine Arts , was also commissioned by the then Munich Lieutenant Schwich to create three war pictures, which he adapted to the style of the time , so-called German art . Otto Pankok is said to have resented Schreiber less against his 1939 party association after the war ( Schreiber is supposed to have said his father registered him with the party at the time ), but rather the style that he gave up against his inner convictions, and Schreiber's images of the 1940s as "academic ham" have titled. During the Second World War , Schreiber stayed in La Baule-Escoublac in the house of the in-laws of his PK comrade Lothar-Günther Buchheim and was with him the only war painter commissioned by the Navy . The House of German Art at the Great German Art Exhibition showed Schreiber 's submarine art in 1942 . The picture he called “U-boat bridge guard” was renamed “Against England” by Nazi propaganda . The illustration “Against England” was added to the “Düsseldorfer Kunstmappe” of Gauleiter Friedrich Karl Florian from 1942 . In 1943 Schreiber created "After the Convoy Battle" and in 1944 the picture "Water bombs".

After the Second World War Schreiber in 1947 by the Director of the Academy of Art Werner Heuser proposed as a professor to the College, which was rejected unanimously, since due to its propaganda painting for the Nazis recorder for persona non grata had become. For the winter semester, Heuser hired Richard Schreiber for two of his painting classes. After the Schreiber- vote of confidence was asked in a conference of the college , and Otto Pankok was for and Walter Köngeter against the removal and the remaining masters contained the votes, Richard Schreiber first worked as a proofreader of the Heuser painting class and later with his own painting class. His students included Karl Heinz Krauskopf and Helmut Seegers (1922–2005)

In 1948 his artist address was the studio house on Sittarder Straße 5 in Düsseldorf. In the 1950s he traveled to Spain and participated in exhibitions.

Richard Schreiber has been completely forgotten today due to his past. Seven years after the Spiegel article "Rhenish U-Boat War" from 1948, the city of Coesfeld commissioned him on May 27, 1955 to create the Phoenix . For the opening of the new town hall on July 8, 1955, the sgraffito "The Phoenix - Resurrected from Ruins" in the stairwell was completed. Documentation on his works can be found in the holdings of the "Rhenish Archive for Artists' Legacies" in Bonn.
