Adolf Bock (born August 5, 1890 in Berlin , † January 13, 1968 in Helsingborg , Sweden ) was a German marine painter .

Life

Adolf Bock was like other well-known German marine painters, e.g. B. Hans Bohrdt , Willy Stöwer or Robert Schmidt-Hamburg , an autodidact .

His grandfather was a landscape painter , his father by profession a farmer and a hobby painter . Supported by his father, he made drawings at an early age. He quickly broke off three training courses as a painter. In 1910 he volunteered for four years in the Imperial Navy. In 1912 he accompanied Kaiser Wilhelm II as a sailor on a Mediterranean voyage and was discovered and promoted by him.

He lived and painted in Germany , Finland and Sweden . In 1919 he moved to Finland in order to better study and paint the still numerous windjammers here . Between the two world wars he often worked for shipping companies, publishers and magazines. He worked for a total of 17 years as a painter, illustrator and copywriter for the Danish-Swedish weekly magazine Familie Journal , for which he even traveled around the world .

On January 30, 1944, Adolf Hitler awarded him the title of professor, the only appointment ever made during the entire Second World War . In addition, he is mentioned and praised by name by Adolf Hitler in the table discussions. On January 30, 1945 he survived the sinking of the passenger steamer Wilhelm Gustloff as a passenger . His rescue is reported in detail in the book The sinking of Wilhelm Gustloff . At the beginning of May 1945, Adolf Bock lived on a ship at the Mürwik Naval School in the Mürwik special area . After he could no longer live there, he moved into a room in Haus Waldruh in Bockholm that same month . On May 25, 1945 he apparently took up his painting activity in Bockholm. His first work there is likely to be the sketch of his new house there from that day. The house served as his main residence until 1950. He then continued to use it as a holiday home until the end of the 1950s. Incidentally, in 1950 Adolf Bock made three pen and ink drawings on the Wilhelm Gustloff ship disaster, but later did not deal with this subject.
