Othon Friesz (born February 6, 1879 in Le Havre , Seine-Maritime department ; † January 10, 1949 in Paris ; actually Henri-Achille-Émile-Othon Friesz ) was a French painter . He is one of the most important representatives of modern painting and Fauvism in the first half of the 20th century.

life and work

Henri-Achille-Émile-Othon Friesz chose the abbreviation Othon Friesz as his stage name . His parents encouraged his painting ambitions at an early age. In 1892, Friesz began training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre as a student of Charles-Marie Lhuillier (1824–1898). There he met Raoul Dufy and Georges Braque . With both of them he should cultivate a lifelong friendship and undertake study trips.

In 1897 Friesz moved to Paris and studied with Léon Bonnat until 1903 with a scholarship at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris . Friesz lived and worked in Paris for the rest of his life. In Paris he met the artists Henri Charles Manguin , Albert Marquet , Henri Matisse , Charles Camoin and Camille Pissarro . The latter should influence him artistically the most.

His first exhibition took place in 1900 at the Salon of the Société des Artistes français in Paris. In 1904 he took part in the Salon d'Automne and in 1906 in the Salon des Indépendants . During this time, Othon Friesz began to paint in the style of Fauvism .

Friesz traveled with his friends in 1911 and 1912 to Portugal and Belgium , as well as Munich and Düsseldorf . Participation in exhibitions of the Berlin Secession in Germany followed, as well as in 1913 participation in the famous Armory Show in New York City and an exhibition in Chicago . From 1912 to 1921 he was a professor at the Académie Moderne in Paris, from 1925 at the Académie Scandinave and from 1926 at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . In 1937, together with Raoul Dufy , he designed the Palais de Chaillot at the World Exhibition in Paris .

Othon Friesz died in Paris in 1949 at the age of 69. It rests on the Cimetière Montparnasse .

In 1959, some of his works were shown posthumously in the graphics department at documenta 2 in Kassel .
