Edmund Anton Kohlschein

Edmund Anton Kohlschein (born May 31, 1900 in Düsseldorf ; † May 15, 1996 there ) was a German painter. He was the youngest son of Josef Kohlschein the Elder, brother of the painters Hans Kohlschein and Josef Kohlschein the Younger .

Life

Edmund Anton Kohlschein attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1917 . At the age of 18 he became a soldier, so that he was able to continue his studies with Professors Willy Spatz and Eduard von Gebhardt from 1919 until he became a master student of Carl Ederer . He joined the “ Young Rhineland ” reform movement early on, which opposed conventional academy operations. It is no coincidence that his works deal with disaster issues during this period of upheaval: “Rhine foreland during floods” 1920, “Burning homestead” 1922, “Napoleonsberg after storms” 1922.

From 1924, his painting style and composition changed. Clear colors and graphic structures prevailed. His brother Hans Kohlschein participated in painting in Düsseldorf (Maria Rosenkranz Church, House of the Elector). This was followed by his own orders: Annakloster in Cologne 1927, Kreuzweg in Sinzenich 1930, Alexian monastery in Neuss. EAK's work is broadly based in terms of topics such as technology - in addition to scenic representations, landscapes, flower pictures and still lifes, it includes portraits, whereby those from the 1920s are to be considered in particular: “Self-portrait” in 1924, his later wife “Hella” in 1924, “Anna Berke ”1927, but also“ Mein Junge ”1932 and the portrait of his brother Hans Kohlschein from 1947 should be mentioned. Most famous, however, are his light-flooded, often impressionistic landscapes, which are often preceded by wonderfully light watercolors: " Malkastenpark " 1930, "Großer Steinbruch" 1952, "Cadaques" 1958, "Cork oaks near Altea" 1970 and again and again chestnuts and motifs from Warburg Country.

Like all Kohlscheins he was also active in the artists' association Malkasten (KVM): 1928–1968 as the garden bailiff of the important park, in 1948 he took over the chairmanship of the " Association of Düsseldorf Artists for Mutual Support and Help ", until 1973 he organized the annual winter exhibitions.

In 1970 he was made an honorary member of the KVM.
